FAQs
AAT questions, answered.
What is the AAT qualification?+
AAT provides regulated, practical accounting qualifications. The current accounting route is the Level 2 Certificate in Accounting, Level 3 Diploma in Accounting and Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting.
Do I need any qualifications to start AAT?+
AAT sets no formal entry requirements for Level 2. A good standard of English and maths is helpful, and AAT Skillcheck can help you decide whether to start at Level 2 or a higher level.
How long does the AAT qualification take?+
The calendar time depends on study pace, prior knowledge and assessment availability. Many part-time students complete one level in roughly 9–15 months, but the official guided and total qualification hours are better planning measures than a guaranteed completion date.
How much does AAT cost?+
AAT charges a one-off registration fee for each qualification plus an assessment fee for each assessment. Learnsignal tuition is priced separately. Current official fees are available at https://www.aat.org.uk/qualifications-and-courses/fees-funding.
Can I get ACCA exemptions with AAT?+
Yes. Completing the full AAT Level 4 qualification gives exemptions from ACCA's three Applied Knowledge exams, so students start ACCA at Applied Skills. ACCA currently charges no exemption fees for this AAT pathway.
What jobs can I get with AAT?+
AAT can support progression into roles such as Accounts Assistant, Bookkeeper, Credit Controller, Payroll Administrator, Assistant Accountant, Tax Assistant and Management Accountant. The appropriate role depends on the level completed and relevant work experience.
Does Level 3 automatically give me AATQB membership?+
No. Completing the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting makes you eligible to apply for AATQB bookkeeping membership. Membership requires a separate application and ongoing membership requirements.
Does Level 4 automatically make me MAAT or an AAT Licensed Accountant?+
No. Level 4 makes you eligible to apply for MAAT, subject to AAT's competence and application requirements. An AAT licence is a separate approval for members who want to provide bookkeeping or accounting services to clients.
