About the AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting
The current AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting (qualification number 603/6339/3) contains three mandatory units and two chosen from five optional units. It has 390 guided learning hours and total qualification time of 985, 1,022 or 1,059 hours depending on the options selected.
The mandatory units are Applied Management Accounting, Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements, and Internal Accounting Systems and Controls. Students choose two from Business Tax, Personal Tax, Audit and Assurance, Cash and Financial Management, and Credit and Debt Management. Each selected unit has its own computer-based assessment.
New registrations for this Q2022 qualification close on 31 August 2026. Registered students have until 31 July 2028 to complete their assessments. The new Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians opens on 1 September 2026.
Completing Level 4 makes you eligible to apply for MAAT subject to AAT's separate membership requirements. It also gives three ACCA Applied Knowledge exemptions. An AAT licence is a separate approval for members who want to offer services to clients.

Level 4 supports progression into professional accounting and finance roles. Completers may apply for MAAT subject to AAT's requirements and receive three ACCA Applied Knowledge exemptions. Licensed status requires a separate AAT application.

Students sit five individual computer-based assessments: one for each of the three mandatory units and two selected optional units. There is no qualification synoptic assessment under Q2022.
Does Level 4 automatically make me MAAT?+
No. Completing Level 4 makes you eligible to apply for MAAT. AAT also requires a membership application and evidence of competence or completion of its MAAT CPD pathway.
Does Level 4 make me an AAT Licensed Accountant?+
No. AAT licensing is a separate application for eligible members who want to provide approved bookkeeping or accounting services to clients.
What ACCA exemptions does Level 4 give?+
The full AAT Level 4 qualification gives exemptions from ACCA's three Applied Knowledge exams. Students then begin at Applied Skills, and ACCA currently charges no exemption fees for this pathway.
