AAT Level 4 Is Changing in September 2026: Should You Finish or Transfer?
A practical guide to the Q2022 Level 4 closure, the new Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians and AAT's unit-transfer rules.
Short answer: if you are already registered on the current Q2022 AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting and can complete it, AAT encourages you to finish. If that is not practical, some Q2022 results can transfer into the new Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians.
What changes on 1 September 2026?
New registrations for the current Q2022 Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting close on 31 August 2026. Registered students can continue Q2022 assessments until 31 July 2028, with final certification by 31 October 2028.
The replacement AAT Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians opens for registration and first teaching on 1 September 2026. It has five mandatory units and 400 guided learning hours:
- Financial Accounting (FNAC) — 80 GLH
- Management Accounting (MNAC) — 110 GLH
- Audit and Internal Controls (ATIC) — 75 GLH
- Principles of Taxation (PTAX) — 75 GLH
- Advanced Business Awareness (AVBA) — 60 GLH
Should an existing Q2022 student finish?
AAT's published position is that current students should be encouraged to complete Q2022 where possible. Finishing avoids the need to remap results, pay a transfer fee or complete a new unit that has no Q2022 equivalent.
Before deciding, check how many Q2022 assessments you have passed, whether you can realistically finish by 31 July 2028, and whether your chosen units transfer cleanly. Your training provider or AAT should confirm the final decision for your individual record.
Which Q2022 results transfer?
- Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements transfers directly to Financial Accounting.
- Applied Management Accounting transfers directly to Management Accounting.
- Internal Accounting Systems and Controls plus Audit and Assurance transfer by averaging both results into Audit and Internal Controls. AAT provides an audit top-up route for a student who has INAC but not AUDT.
- Business Tax plus Personal Tax transfer by averaging both results into Principles of Taxation.
- Credit and Debt Management and Cash and Financial Management have no new equivalent and do not transfer.
- Advanced Business Awareness has no Q2022 equivalent.
What other transfer conditions matter?
AAT says there is no limit to the number of Q2022 units that can transfer, but you must complete at least one assessment in the new Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians to receive that qualification. A £50 transfer fee applies to eligible Q2022 students. AQ2016 results do not transfer into L4PAT.
When do the new assessments become available?
- Financial Accounting and Management Accounting: 21 September 2026
- Audit and Internal Controls and the audit top-up: 12 October 2026
- Advanced Business Awareness: 26 October 2026
- Principles of Taxation under Finance Act 2026: 25 January 2027
This phased timetable matters if you are planning an early transfer: not every new assessment is available on 1 September.
What should you do next?
- Confirm whether you are registered on Q2022 or an older AQ2016 qualification.
- List every Level 4 assessment you have passed and any assessments already booked.
- Compare those results with AAT's transfer table.
- Ask AAT or your training provider to confirm the transfer outcome and timing.
- Do not stop or change study based only on an unofficial summary.
Use the current Learnsignal Q2022 Level 4 page for the existing qualification. The new L4PAT course pages will become the primary Level 4 route from September 2026.
