What is AAT Principles of Bookkeeping Controls (POBC)?
Principles of Bookkeeping Controls (POBC) is a mandatory unit in the AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting. Building on Introduction to Bookkeeping, this unit focuses on the controls businesses use to ensure their financial records are accurate and complete.
POBC Syllabus Overview
- Control accounts — the sales ledger control account and purchase ledger control account
- Reconciliations — reconciling the control account to the subsidiary ledger
- The trial balance — preparing and understanding a trial balance
- Errors — types of errors (errors of omission, commission, principle, transposition, original entry, reversal) and their effect on the trial balance
- The suspense account — using a suspense account to correct errors
- Bank reconciliation — reconciling the cash book to the bank statement
Exam Format
POBC is assessed by an on-demand computer-based assessment lasting 1 hour 30 minutes. Questions mix short-answer tasks with more involved reconciliation and error-correction scenarios.
Key Topics to Master
Control Account Reconciliation
This is one of the most frequently tested areas. Be confident in building up the control account from opening balance, invoices, credit notes, and cash received/paid, then reconciling the closing balance to the list of individual debtor/creditor balances.
Types of Errors
Memorise which errors are revealed by the trial balance and which are not. Errors that do NOT affect the trial balance balance (e.g. error of omission, reversal of entries, error of principle) are a common exam topic.
Bank Reconciliation
Know how to deal with unpresented cheques and outstanding deposits, and how to identify errors in the cash book vs the bank statement.
Study Tips for POBC
- Practise full reconciliation questions — do not stop at understanding the theory
- Create a table of all error types and their effects on the trial balance
- Work through AAT practice assessments under timed conditions
