AAT practice assessments are taken online in the AAT Lifelong Learning Portal, and your device must meet the AAT's technical requirements before you start either a practice or a live assessment. The AAT supports Windows 11 (64-bit) and recent macOS laptops and desktops, and does not support Chromebooks, tablets, phones or Linux devices. This guide sets out how to find practice assessments, the device and connection checks, the rule on AI applications and the extra requirements for one Level 3 assessment, using the AAT's own guidance. For help with the assessments themselves see our ultimate guide to AAT exams.

Where to find practice assessments

The AAT's instructions are to log in to the Lifelong Learning Portal and look under Your goals: collections of activities. Choose your qualification and unit, click Launch, select Launch again, then click Practice assessments. Practice assessments are sat online in the portal. The AAT's page does not describe their format, length or question types, and it does not compare them with live assessments, so do not assume they match your live paper. Treat them as practice for the interface and the style of task, and use your tutor's mock papers as well.

Device requirements

RequirementWhat the AAT says
Operating systemLaptop or desktop running Windows 11 (64-bit) or macOS Sonoma 14.x and higher, including Tahoe v26 with Rosetta 2 installed and activated
Not supportedChromebooks, tablets, phones and Linux devices
ScreenResolution of 1368 x 769 or higher
Memory and storageAt least 8GB RAM and at least 2GB free disk space
ProcessorIntel i3 or SSE4-compatible, minimum 1.30 GHz, 2 cores and 4 threads
ConnectionMinimum of 300kbps bandwidth
BrowserLatest version of Chrome

AI applications on your device

The AAT states that the device must not have AI applications installed, enabled or accessible, including Microsoft Copilot, and that you are responsible for controlling access to AI tools on personal devices. If you study on a shared or work laptop, check this before test day rather than during check-in, because a device that fails the requirement may not be usable for the assessment.

Remotely invigilated assessments

Practice assessments are different from remotely invigilated assessments, which your assessment centre schedules. For remote invigilation the AAT requires the PSI Bridge Secure Browser as well as the standard device checks. Remote invigilation adds £41 per assessment part, according to the AAT's fees page, and results for typical bookkeeping and tax assessments are expected within 10 working days when remotely invigilated. Ask your centre how it schedules remote sittings and what room rules apply.

Extra requirements for the Level 3 MATS assessment

The MATS assessment in the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting has additional requirements: a Windows PC with Microsoft Excel and macros enabled, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, a browser plugin or extension, and pop-ups enabled in Chrome. Mac devices and cloud-based Excel are not supported for this assessment. If you study on a Mac, plan access to a compatible Windows PC for this assessment in good time. Our guide to passing AAT Level 3 and the AAT Level 3 course page cover the units.

How to get the most from practice

These are our suggestions rather than AAT guidance. Run a practice assessment on the exact device and connection you will use in the live sitting, so you find technical problems early. Do at least one under timed conditions without notes. Review each answer afterwards and write down the topics where you lost marks, then revisit those before your next attempt. Combine portal practice with your provider's mocks and our AAT exam tips.

A checklist before test day

Again, these are our suggestions rather than AAT rules. A week before the sitting, confirm your operating system and browser version, remove or disable any AI applications, including Copilot, test your connection speed, and make sure your charger is to hand. On the day, allow extra time to log in and read the instructions. If you have a problem you cannot fix, contact your centre straight away, because they schedule the sitting and can advise on rebooking.

Booking and planning

Registering with the AAT makes you eligible to sit assessments, which are taken at approved assessment venues or remotely through your centre. Our guide to AAT exam centres explains how to find one, and our page on AAT exam dates helps you plan. If you are new to the qualification, begin with what AAT is, then check the AAT Level 2 and Level 3 pages.
