What is AAT Principles of Costing (PCTN)?
Principles of Costing (PCTN) is a mandatory unit in the AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting. It introduces management accounting concepts — specifically how businesses classify, measure, and control their costs — providing the foundation for the more advanced costing units at Levels 3 and 4.
PCTN Syllabus Overview
- Cost classifications — fixed, variable, semi-variable; direct and indirect; product and period costs
- Inventory valuation — FIFO, LIFO, and AVCO methods
- Labour costs — basic pay, overtime, bonuses, idle time
- Overhead absorption — absorption rate calculations, under/over-absorption
- Break-even analysis — contribution, break-even point, margin of safety, target profit
Exam Format
PCTN is assessed by an on-demand computer-based assessment lasting 1 hour 30 minutes, with a mix of calculation and short-answer questions.
Key Topics to Master
Inventory Valuation
FIFO (first in, first out), LIFO (last in, first out), and AVCO (average cost) give different inventory values and profit figures. Practice the full issue and receipt schedule for each method until you can do them under timed conditions.
Overhead Absorption
Be confident calculating pre-determined overhead absorption rates (OARs) using direct labour hours, machine hours, or units. Under-absorption means actual overhead exceeded absorbed overhead — know how to interpret this.
Break-Even Analysis
Contribution = selling price minus variable cost. Break-even point = fixed costs ÷ contribution per unit. These formulas appear in almost every assessment — learn them and practise applying them in different scenarios.
Study Tips for PCTN
- Focus on calculations — this unit is heavily numerical
- Practise FIFO, LIFO, and AVCO until each method is instinctive
- Make a formula sheet for break-even, OAR, and overhead under/over-absorption
- Use AAT practice assessments to check your approach to multi-step questions
