What is AAT Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements (FAPS)?

Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements (FAPS) is a mandatory unit in the AAT Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Accounting. It is one of the more technically demanding Level 3 units, requiring students to prepare complete financial statements from incomplete or adjusted data.

FAPS Syllabus Overview

  • Incomplete records — reconstructing accounts from limited information using the accounting equation and control accounts
  • Partnership accounts — profit sharing, appropriation accounts, current and capital accounts
  • Sole trader financial statements — income statement, statement of financial position with adjustments
  • Limited company financial statements — income statement, statement of financial position, statement of changes in equity
  • The extended trial balance — adding adjustments (accruals, prepayments, depreciation, irrecoverable debts) and extending to produce financial statements

Exam Format

FAPS is assessed by an on-demand computer-based assessment. Expect a mix of shorter tasks on specific adjustments and a longer end-to-end task requiring preparation of financial statements.

Key Topics to Master

Adjustments

Accruals, prepayments, depreciation (straight-line and reducing balance), and irrecoverable/doubtful debts are tested every time. Know exactly how each adjustment affects the income statement and statement of financial position.

Extended Trial Balance

Practice completing the full ETB, including correctly extending each adjusted figure into the income statement or balance sheet columns. A methodical approach prevents errors.

Partnership Accounts

The appropriation account allocates profit between partners according to salary, interest on capital, and profit share ratios. This is a common area where students lose marks by applying the sharing ratio to the wrong profit figure.

Study Tips for FAPS

  • Work through full financial statement questions from start to finish — partial practice is not enough
  • Create a checklist of all common adjustments and double-check each one in every question
  • Use the AAT sample assessments to understand how questions are structured
