Finance in Oil and Gas: A Unique Environment
Oil and gas finance combines technical accounting with commodity price risk, complex joint venture structures, international operations, and sector-specific accounting standards. It is one of the most technically demanding and well-paid sectors for finance professionals.
Key Accounting Issues in Oil and Gas
IFRS 6 (Exploration for and Evaluation of Mineral Resources) governs how exploration costs are recognised. The successful efforts method versus the full cost method affects how exploration costs are capitalised or expensed. Decommissioning provisions (IAS 37) for asset retirement obligations can be enormous — multi-billion pound provisions are common for North Sea operators. Joint venture accounting (IFRS 11) is pervasive as most oil and gas projects involve multiple parties.
Roles in Oil and Gas Finance
Key roles include: Joint Venture Accountant (managing financial relationships with JV partners, cash calls, and JV audits), Revenue Accountant (lifting and entitlement accounting for production), Financial Reporting (complex group structures, often with many SPVs), Treasury (managing commodity price hedging and foreign currency risk), and Tax (transfer pricing for international operations, deferred tax on massive fixed assets).
Where to Work
The UK's North Sea oil and gas sector is centred on Aberdeen, where the major operators (BP, Shell, Equinor, Harbour Energy) have significant offices. London houses the headquarters and trading operations. Internationally, the sector offers opportunities in Houston, Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and across Africa and the Middle East.
ACCA and CIMA in Oil and Gas
ACCA is preferred for reporting and external-facing roles; CIMA for management accounting, commercial finance, and FP&A within operating companies. Both are well recognised by major oil and gas employers.
