Part-Qualified Accountant Career Progression: What to Expect
How your career progresses as a part-qualified ACCA or CIMA student - roles, salaries, and what employers expect.
The Part-Qualified Journey
The years you spend part-qualified - studying ACCA or CIMA alongside work - are more important for your career than most people realise. The roles you take, the experience you build, and the employers you work for during your study years significantly shape where you land after qualification. This is not a holding period: it is your career foundation.
Typical Roles by Stage
Applied Knowledge/Foundation level: Accounts Assistant, Purchase Ledger Clerk, Junior Auditor. Salary: £22,000-£30,000. Applied Skills/Operational level: Financial Accounts Assistant, Junior Management Accountant, Audit Junior. Salary: £26,000-£36,000. Strategic/Management level (ACCA finalist or CIMA Strategic): Management Accountant, Financial Reporting Accountant, Senior Auditor. Salary: £32,000-£46,000. Newly qualified: £38,000-£55,000 depending on sector and location.
What Employers Expect from Part-Qualified Candidates
Progress on your qualification - employers expect you to be actively sitting papers and moving forward, not stalling. Curiosity about the business - part-qualified accountants who ask commercial questions and show interest beyond their immediate role are remembered. Reliability - consistently accurate work, meeting deadlines, and flagging issues early are the basic requirements.
Building PER (Practical Experience Requirements)
ACCA's PER requires 36 months of practical experience documented against specific performance objectives. CIMA requires relevant work experience signed off at each level. Being intentional about building experience across different areas - not just the same tasks repeated - gives you a richer PER and a stronger CV.
When to Consider Moving Roles
If your current role is not giving you new experiences after 18-24 months, it is worth considering a move. Staying in a role that is not developing you is comfortable but costs you in the long run - both in career terms and in exam motivation.
