Your First Learnsignal CPE Course: A Preparation Checklist
Prepare for your first course with checks for eligibility, access, completion requirements and certificate records, from choosing a subject to saving evidence.
Before booking your first Learnsignal course for US CPA CPE, confirm three things: that the specific program offers the credit you need, that you can complete it within the access period, and that you know what evidence you will receive. A little preparation makes it easier to focus on learning once you start.
This guide provides a checklist from course selection to keeping your certificate. Use the current course disclosures and enrolment terms for the exact assessment, retake and access conditions. It does not assume that every item in the CPD catalogue has the same US CPE eligibility or completion process.
1. Write down the requirement you are trying to meet
Record your licensing jurisdiction, reporting period and remaining credit needs. Include any subject-specific requirement, such as ethics or accounting and auditing, rather than recording only a total number of hours.
Check the current rules of your state board. NASBA’s jurisdiction information is a useful starting point, but the board makes the final acceptance decision. If you hold licences in more than one jurisdiction, check each set of requirements before assuming a course can be reported to both.
Keep your professional-body obligations separate from your licence requirements. A course may be useful for several purposes, but a general CPD label does not establish how it counts for each one.
2. Verify the sponsor and the specific program
Learnsignal’s National Registry listing identifies sponsor number 166617 and the QAS Self Study delivery method. That is sponsor information. It is not an individual NASBA endorsement of every course title, and it does not remove the need to check the program’s details and your board’s rules.
Before paying for a course you intend to claim as CPE, obtain its current US CPE information. Save the course title and identifier, delivery method, credit amount, field of study, learning objectives, program knowledge level and prerequisites. If a page shows only CPD hours, ask for the CPE details rather than making a conversion yourself.
Our guide to NASBA and CPE explains the distinction between the sponsor, the learning program and the licensing board.
3. Choose a course you can use at work
Compare the learning objectives with a task you want to improve. For example, someone working with audit data can review Data Analytics for Auditors in MS Excel. Its published syllabus covers analysis of financial data, statistics and presenting analytical findings. It expects basic Excel skills, and familiarity with auditing is helpful.
That makes it a useful course to investigate for an audit-related learning goal. Before booking it for US CPE, confirm the current course-specific CPE availability, credits and field. The CPD unit figure on a catalogue page should not be treated as a CPE award.
For a different goal, browse the full CPD catalogue and shortlist a course with appropriate prerequisites. Starting at the right level makes the learning and any required assessment more manageable.
4. Check the purchase and access conditions
Read the offer for the exact course or plan you are buying. A course appearing in a catalogue does not, by itself, tell you which purchase includes it or how long you will have access.
Use this copyable checklist before enrolment:
- Exact course title and identifier: ______
- US CPE availability, delivery method, credits and field confirmed: ______
- Selected course or subscription includes the program: ______
- Access start and end dates: ______
- Required software or other materials: ______
- Completion assessment, pass requirement and retake conditions: ______
- Certificate availability and any action needed to obtain it: ______
- Refund, cancellation and renewal terms checked: ______
- Provider support contact and personal completion target: ______
Check current CPD plans for the offer available to you. Resolve missing course or certificate information with Learnsignal support before purchase, especially if your reporting deadline is close.
5. Prepare your account and study schedule
Use the name you need on your completion record and an email address you will retain access to. Keep the purchase confirmation with the course details you saved. After enrolment, confirm that the intended course is available to your account before scheduling the final study session.
Set aside time for learning, practice and the required assessment. Give yourself a buffer before your reporting deadline so there is time to resolve access problems or correct a record. An advertised credit amount is not a promise that every learner will finish in that number of clock hours.
For software courses, check the required version and practise with suitable sample or anonymised data. Keep employer or client information out of exercises unless you have permission to use it.
6. Complete the program’s requirements
Read the course instructions at the start. Identify which materials, review activities and assessment steps are required, and complete them yourself. Use feedback to revisit topics you have not understood. Follow the program’s stated retake conditions if another attempt is necessary.
Self-study credit is governed by the program’s credit determination and successful completion requirements. It is not created by leaving a video open or by recording your own stopwatch time. Our CPE credit-calculation guide explains how the 50-minute convention differs from an individual’s study duration.
Do not mark the course as verified CPE in your records simply because you have enrolled or finished watching the videos. Check the awarded completion evidence and any remaining program requirements first.
7. Check and save the certificate
When the provider makes your completion document available, check your name, the program title, completion date, sponsor information, delivery method, awarded credits and field of study. Compare it with the course information and your intended reporting period. If anything is missing or incorrect, ask the provider to clarify or correct the document; do not edit it yourself.
Save a copy somewhere you control, together with the course outline and any relevant provider correspondence. Keep your learning notes separately so they cannot be confused with the official completion record. Follow your board’s retention period rather than assuming one nationwide rule applies.
Use our copyable CPE tracking log to record the course and link to its evidence. Record the final awarded credits and their fields accurately, and assess how they count under each applicable board’s rules.
Before you start
Your preparation is complete when you have a suitable course, confirmed CPE eligibility for your purpose, clear access and assessment conditions, and a plan for keeping the evidence. Begin with the Learnsignal course catalogue, or review Data Analytics for Auditors in MS Excel if audit analysis matches your goal. Confirm the specific CPE disclosures before enrolling.
