Finance Careers in Hospitality and Leisure: ACCA and CIMA in Hotels and Travel
Finance in Hospitality and Leisure
Hotels, restaurant groups, travel companies, airlines, theme parks, and leisure businesses employ substantial finance teams. Hospitality finance has distinctive characteristics: daily revenue reporting, RevPAR (Revenue Per Available Room) and other sector-specific metrics, complex seasonal patterns, and high fixed cost structures that make management accounting particularly important.
Key Finance Concepts in Hospitality
Revenue management: daily and weekly revenue reporting by property, yield management data, and occupancy vs rate analysis. USALI (Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry): the hotel sector's standard management accounting framework — widely used in major hotel groups as a common language for financial reporting across properties. EBITDAR (Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation, Amortisation, and Rent): the key profit metric for leased hotel properties, stripping out rent and financing costs to show operational performance.
Key Employers
Major hotel groups: IHG, Hilton, Marriott, Accor, Whitbread (Premier Inn). Restaurant groups: Compass Group, Sodexo, Mitchells & Butlers. Travel: TUI, Thomas Cook (now Barrhead Travel), easyJet, British Airways (IAG). Leisure: Merlin Entertainments, Alton Towers, Center Parcs.
ACCA and CIMA in Hospitality
Both are valued. CIMA is preferred for commercial finance, revenue analysis, and operational management accounting roles in major hotel and restaurant groups. ACCA is common in shared service centres, group reporting functions, and multi-property ownership structures where statutory reporting is complex.
