London Finance Salaries: Why Sector Matters More Than City
London finance salaries vary more by sector than almost any other city in the UK. A newly qualified ACCA member in retail might earn £45,000 in London; the same qualification in investment banking might command £65,000–£80,000. Understanding which sector you're targeting — and what it pays — is essential for London finance career planning.
Financial Services (Banking, Asset Management, Insurance)
The premium sector. Newly qualified: £55,000–£75,000. Finance Manager / Controller: £80,000–£120,000. CFO of a medium-sized firm: £200,000–£400,000+. The City and Canary Wharf concentrate these roles. Major employers: HSBC, Barclays, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, BlackRock, Legal & General, Aviva, Lloyd's of London. Bonus structures can add 20–100% on top of base salary.
Professional Services (Big 4, Mid-Tier Firms)
Newly qualified (post-ACA/ACCA): £48,000–£62,000 in London. Senior Manager: £75,000–£100,000. Director/Partner: £120,000–£350,000+. The Big 4 (Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, EY) all have their main offices in London. Mid-tier firms (Grant Thornton, BDO, Mazars, Forvis) offer slightly lower pay but often better work-life balance.
Technology
Finance in London's tech sector (the Silicon Roundabout area, plus offices of major US tech companies) pays well and grows quickly. Newly qualified: £50,000–£65,000. Senior FP&A: £70,000–£95,000. CFO of a Series C/D startup: £120,000–£180,000 plus equity. Stock-based compensation can significantly increase total package.
Retail and Consumer Goods
Solid but lower than financial services. Newly qualified: £42,000–£55,000. FC: £70,000–£90,000. Finance Director: £100,000–£150,000. Major employers in London include ASOS, Burberry, Associated British Foods, and the London HQs of international retailers.
Public Sector and NHS
NHS band structures cap salaries — a finance manager is typically Band 8a/8b (approximately £50,000–£65,000 in London with High Cost Area Supplement). Senior NHS finance director: £90,000–£130,000. Pay is lower than private sector but job security is high and pension provision excellent.
Media and Entertainment
BBC, ITV, Warner Bros. Discovery, Sky, and the major streaming services all have significant London finance teams. Newly qualified: £45,000–£58,000. Controller: £70,000–£95,000. Creatively interesting sector with reasonable pay.
