Is ACCA Recognised in the USA? A Practical Guide
How ACCA is recognised in the United States - employer acceptance, CPA pathways, and working as an ACCA member in the US.
ACCA Recognition in the USA
ACCA is not directly equivalent to the US CPA (Certified Public Accountant) qualification - these are different credentials from different bodies. However, ACCA is increasingly recognised by multinational employers in the USA, particularly at the management and senior finance level. Large multinationals with UK or European origins, the Big 4 accounting firms operating globally, and international banks all employ and value ACCA members in the USA.
ACCA vs CPA in the US
For roles requiring a US licence to practice as a CPA - signing audit reports, providing audit and attest services to US clients - you need a US CPA licence from a State Board of Accountancy. ACCA alone does not grant this right. For the vast majority of finance roles in the USA (management accounting, FP&A, financial reporting, corporate finance, internal audit), ACCA is fully accepted and valued.
The ACCA-AICPA Pathway
ACCA has a mutual recognition agreement with AICPA (the American Institute of CPAs). ACCA members who meet the requirements can apply for AICPA membership and potentially pursue the CPA pathway with some credit for prior learning. The specific pathway varies by US state - not all states accept the ACCA-to-CPA route equally.
Practical Reality in 2026
At global multinationals in the US, ACCA is well understood by senior finance and HR leadership. At smaller US domestic companies, you may need to explain what ACCA is. In financial services (banks, asset managers), ACCA members are common in finance function roles. In public accounting firms providing audit services, CPA is required for signing authority.
CGMA Helps
ACCA members can also hold the CGMA (Chartered Global Management Accountant) designation, which is jointly awarded with AICPA and has stronger recognition in the US corporate environment specifically.
