ACCA vs CPA: Which Is Better for an International Accounting Career?
ACCA vs CPA: The Core Difference
ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is a UK-origin qualification recognised in 180+ countries. CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is a US-origin qualification, administered state-by-state, and primarily recognised in the United States and in contexts connected to US financial reporting (US GAAP, SEC requirements). Both are prestigious — the right choice depends entirely on where you want to build your career.
Choose ACCA If...
Your career ambitions are outside the United States — ACCA is far more widely recognised internationally than CPA. You want to work in the UK, Ireland, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, or any market where ACCA has strong employer recognition. You want a single qualification rather than 50 state-by-state licences (in the US, CPA is state-licensed and you can only practise in states where you are licensed).
Choose CPA If...
You want to work in the United States, or in roles that require preparation or review of US GAAP financial statements. You are based in the US and work for US clients. The "Big 4 in the US" path is heavily CPA-focused. Some US employers won't hire for audit roles without a CPA licence.
Can You Have Both?
Yes — professionals working across the US-international boundary often hold both. ACCA members can sit the CPA exam (eligibility varies by state) and vice versa. Holding both is particularly valuable for roles at the intersection of US and international financial reporting.
Structure and Difficulty
ACCA: 13 exams, 36 months experience, professional ethics module. Takes 3–5 years. CPA: 4 sections (FAR, AUD, REG, and one discipline section from BAR, TCP, or ISC), each with a maximum 18-month window to pass all four. Plus 150 credit hours of education and 1 year experience in most states.
