Finance Careers in Pharmaceuticals and Life Sciences: ACCA and CIMA
A guide to finance roles in pharmaceutical and life sciences companies - what they involve, what they pay, and why ACCA and CIMA are valued.
Finance in the Pharmaceutical Sector
The pharmaceutical and life sciences sector is one of the highest-paying environments for finance professionals outside of financial services. Companies like Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson, AstraZeneca, GSK, Roche, and the many mid-tier and biotech firms employ large finance functions dealing with some of the most complex accounting and commercial finance challenges in any industry.
What Makes Pharma Finance Distinctive
R&D expenditure accounting: pharma companies spend billions on research and development. Under IFRS, R&D costs are generally expensed as incurred until specific capitalisation criteria are met. Understanding when and how to capitalise development costs (IAS 38) is a core technical area for pharma finance professionals. Royalties and licensing: complex revenue recognition under IFRS 15 for milestone payments, royalties, and licensing agreements is a significant technical area. Transfer pricing: most large pharma companies are multinationals with significant intellectual property, making transfer pricing one of the most complex and high-value technical areas in pharma finance. Clinical trial accounting: accounting for the cost of clinical trials - including accruals for sites, CROs, and investigator payments - requires specialist knowledge.
Roles and Salaries
Financial Analyst (pharma): £38,000-£52,000. Finance Business Partner (commercial pharma): £55,000-£80,000. Finance Manager/Controller (pharma operations): £60,000-£90,000. Finance Director (pharma affiliate or business unit): £100,000-£160,000.
ACCA or CIMA for Pharma?
Both are valued. ACCA is strong for financial reporting roles dealing with complex IFRS technical areas. CIMA is strong for commercial finance, FP&A, and business partnering roles. Many pharma finance directors hold ACCA or ACA given the technical reporting demands at senior level.
