Finance Careers in Media and Entertainment: ACCA and CIMA Sector Guide
Finance roles in media, broadcasting, streaming, and entertainment - what they involve and how to build a career.
Finance in Media and Entertainment
The media and entertainment sector encompasses television and film production, streaming platforms, music, gaming, publishing, and advertising. Finance in this sector combines standard corporate finance skills with sector-specific knowledge: rights accounting, production cost control, content amortisation, and increasingly the economics of streaming and subscription models.
Key Finance Areas in Media
Content and production finance: Managing the budgets of TV programmes, films, or games from greenlight through to delivery. This is highly specialised - production accountants work on set and manage cash flow for projects that can run from tens of thousands to hundreds of millions of pounds. Rights accounting: Media companies hold significant intangible assets in the form of content rights. Accounting for content libraries, amortisation of rights, and impairment testing (IAS 36 applied to content assets) is a core technical area. Commercial finance in streaming: Subscription economics - customer acquisition cost, lifetime value, churn rate, and content ROI - are the key metrics. Finance business partners in streaming companies spend significant time on these commercial metrics.
Employers
BBC, ITV, Sky, Channel 4, Netflix UK, Disney, Sony Music, Universal Music Group, EA, Activision Blizzard, and the many production companies and independent studios that make up the creative industries ecosystem.
ACCA or CIMA?
Both are found in media finance. ACCA is common for financial reporting and rights accounting roles. CIMA suits commercial finance and FP&A roles. Many senior media finance professionals also have production accounting experience which is a distinct specialist pathway.
