ACCA Eligibility 2026: Who Can Apply and What Qualifications Do You Need?
Wondering if you're eligible for ACCA? Here's everything you need to know about entry requirements, minimum qualifications, and the different routes into the ACCA qualification in 2026.
ACCA is one of the most accessible global accounting qualifications — there are multiple routes in, and the minimum entry bar is deliberately low to allow candidates from different academic backgrounds to qualify. This guide covers every eligibility route, the minimum qualifications required at each, and what exemptions you might be entitled to based on what you already hold.
Minimum Age Requirement
The minimum age to register for ACCA is 18 years old for the full ACCA qualification. Students aged 16 or 17 can start with the Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) qualification, which serves as a preparatory route before transitioning to the full ACCA.
ACCA Eligibility After 10+2 (Class 12)
Indian students can apply for ACCA directly after completing Class 12 (10+2), provided they meet the following criteria:
- Passes in at least 5 subjects at Class 12 level
- A minimum of 65% in two of those subjects (typically English and Mathematics or Accounts)
- A minimum of 50% in the remaining subjects
- English must be one of the subjects
Commerce students with strong Accounts and English results typically meet these requirements comfortably. Science students can also qualify if they meet the percentage criteria, although they may find the transition to accounting concepts steeper without prior exposure.
Students who do not meet the 65%/50% threshold can register for the Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) route instead, which provides the same knowledge content and transitions into the full ACCA qualification.
ACCA Eligibility After Graduation (B.Com, BBA, BSc)
Graduates are eligible to register for ACCA regardless of their undergraduate subject, provided they meet the Class 12 standards above (or equivalent). However, certain graduation qualifications also unlock paper exemptions:
- B.Com: Up to 4 paper exemptions from Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels
- BBA: 1 to 3 exemptions depending on programme content
- BSc Accounting/Finance: Varies; typically 3–6 exemptions if syllabus matches ACCA content
Your exemption entitlement is confirmed after you submit your transcripts during registration. ACCA maintains a database of recognised qualifications and their associated exemptions.
ACCA Eligibility After CA (Indian Chartered Accountant)
Fully qualified members of ICAI are eligible for ACCA's maximum 9 exemptions — covering all Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers. You enter directly at the Strategic Professional level and need only 4 papers to complete ACCA. This makes ACCA highly attractive for CAs who want an internationally portable credential alongside their Indian qualification. See our full guide on ACCA exemptions after CA for details.
ACCA Eligibility With an MBA
MBA holders — particularly those with a Finance specialisation — may be eligible for up to 9 exemptions, subject to ACCA reviewing and approving your MBA syllabus. An MBA from a well-regarded institution with a recognised finance programme typically attracts 5–9 exemptions. MBA graduates without a finance focus usually receive fewer. ACCA reviews each application individually based on syllabus content rather than institution name alone.
No Prior Qualification? The FIA Route
If you don't meet the standard Class 12 entry requirements, ACCA offers the Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) route. FIA covers introductory accounting and finance at diploma level. On successful completion, you receive full credit for the Applied Knowledge level papers and can continue directly to Applied Skills. The FIA route is also popular for career changers coming from non-finance backgrounds.
Documents Required at Registration
- Class 10 certificate (proof of identity and date of birth)
- Class 12 mark sheet and certificate
- Graduation degree and transcript (if applying for exemptions)
- Professional qualification certificate (for CA, MBA, or other exemption claims)
- Passport or national ID
Is There an Age Limit for ACCA?
There is no upper age limit. ACCA is open to candidates at any stage of their career. Many professionals pursue ACCA alongside full-time jobs — the flexible exam sitting structure (four sittings per year, papers sat individually) makes it possible to study at a pace that suits a working life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a science student do ACCA?
Yes, provided they meet the Class 12 percentage requirements (65% in 2 subjects, 50% in others including English). Science students without accounting background often find the early papers require more initial study, but ACCA is fully open to them.
Is there a limit on how many times I can attempt ACCA papers?
No formal cap on attempts, but ACCA's 7-year rule means you must complete the Strategic Professional level within 7 years of passing your first Strategic Professional paper. Papers at Applied Knowledge and Skills levels can be attempted as many times as needed.
Do I need work experience to register for ACCA?
No work experience is needed to register or sit exams. However, to become a full ACCA member (not just a student), you must complete the Practical Experience Requirement (PER) — 36 months of relevant supervised work experience. You can accumulate this before, during, or after your exams.
