ACCA Exemptions After CA: How Many Papers Can You Skip in 2026?
Qualified as an Indian CA? You're eligible for up to 9 ACCA exemptions. Here's exactly which papers you skip and the 4 you need to complete.
If you've qualified as a Chartered Accountant through ICAI, you're already most of the way to ACCA. Indian CAs are eligible to skip up to 9 of ACCA's 13 papers — leaving just 4 Strategic Professional papers to complete the full qualification. This makes ACCA one of the most accessible next steps for qualified CAs who want internationally recognised credentials.
How Many ACCA Papers Can a Qualified CA Skip?
A fully qualified ICAI member is eligible for 9 exemptions — the entire Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels:
- Applied Knowledge (3 papers exempt): Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA), Financial Accounting (FA)
- Applied Skills (6 papers exempt): Corporate and Business Law (LW), Performance Management (PM), Taxation (TX), Financial Reporting (FR), Audit and Assurance (AA), Financial Management (FM)
You enter ACCA directly at the Strategic Professional level and need only 4 papers: Strategic Business Leader (SBL), Strategic Business Reporting (SBR), and 2 of the 4 optional papers (AFM, APM, ATX, or AAA). A motivated professional can complete these in 12–18 months.
Exemptions by Stage of CA Qualification
Not yet a fully qualified CA? You may still be eligible for partial exemptions:
- CA Foundation: 0 exemptions (ACCA Applied Knowledge still required)
- CA Inter / IPCC Group 1 only: Up to 3 Applied Knowledge exemptions
- CA Inter / IPCC both groups: Up to 5 exemptions
- CA Final qualified (full ICAI member): 9 exemptions — the full entitlement
How to Claim Your Exemptions
- Register with ACCA at accaglobal.com and indicate you hold a prior qualification
- Upload your ICAI membership certificate and CA Final mark sheet during registration
- ACCA confirms your exemption entitlement — usually within 5–10 working days
- Pay the exemption fees — £89 per Applied Knowledge paper and £123 per Applied Skills paper
- Enrol for Strategic Professional papers and begin studying
You do not have to claim all 9 exemptions. Some CAs choose to sit TX or FR to reinforce their global technical knowledge. Most, however, take the full 9 to minimise time and cost to qualification.
What Are the Exemption Fees?
- Applied Knowledge (3 papers): £89 × 3 = £267
- Applied Skills (6 papers): £123 × 6 = £738
- Total exemption cost: approximately £1,005 (around ₹1.07 lakh at current rates)
This is significantly less than the time and exam fees required to sit those 9 papers. The full cost to complete ACCA after CA — exemption fees plus 4 Strategic Professional exams — typically falls in the range of £1,800–£2,200 (approximately ₹1.9–2.4 lakh).
Is ACCA Worth It After Qualifying as a CA?
For most CAs, the 4-paper ACCA route is an efficient investment with strong returns. ACCA is recognised in over 180 countries, which matters if you're targeting international employers, Big 4 advisory in overseas markets, or roles at global shared service centres (GSSCs) operating in India's major cities. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sit exempt papers voluntarily?
Yes, but ACCA won't count a voluntarily-sat paper as both exempt and as a pass. If you choose to sit an exempt paper, you simply do so as a full exam attempt — your exemption is waived for that paper.
Is the 9-exemption entitlement automatic?
Not quite. You must submit your CA credentials during ACCA registration for ACCA to confirm your entitlement. The exemptions are then activated once you pay the corresponding exemption fees.
Does ACCA recognise ICAI qualifications universally?
ACCA has a long-standing recognition relationship with ICAI. The 9-paper exemption for fully qualified CAs has been in place for many years. Exemption policies can occasionally update, so always verify your specific entitlement at accaglobal.com before registering.
