AAT Level 2 Synoptic Assessment: The Business Environment Explained
The Level 2 Certificate in Accounting is the only Q2022 AAT qualification with a synoptic assessment. It lasts 2 hours, is worth 30 percent of the grade and costs 72 pounds.
Most AAT assessments under the current Q2022 qualifications are individual unit assessments. The exception is the Level 2 Certificate in Accounting, which keeps a synoptic assessment: The Business Environment, a computer-based assessment of 2 hours that counts for 30 percent of the overall qualification grade, according to AAT's specification. AAT's pass mark is 70 percent across all assessments. This guide explains what the synoptic tests, how it is marked and graded, what it costs and when results arrive. For the qualification as a whole read our AAT levels guide, and for grades see our how AAT assessments are graded.

What a synoptic is
AAT describes a synoptic assessment as one that tests your understanding of the connections between different topics across the qualification. Under Q2022, AAT replaced synoptics at the other levels with individual unit assessments. The Level 2 Certificate in Accounting keeps one. Levels 3 and 4 have unit assessments only, so do not expect a synoptic if you are studying those levels.
The Level 2 structure
The qualification has four mandatory units: Introduction to Bookkeeping, Principles of Bookkeeping Controls, Principles of Costing and The Business Environment. The three bookkeeping and costing units are each assessed by a computer-based, computer-marked unit assessment of one hour 30 minutes. The Business Environment is the synoptic. The specification weights the assessments at 25 percent, 25 percent, 20 percent and 30 percent.
Format and marking
The specification lists the synoptic as a computer-based assessment lasting 2 hours, partly computer-marked and partly human-marked. We could not confirm the number of tasks, so we do not give one. AAT says synoptic results are released online after a wait that we cover below.
Pass mark and grade
AAT keeps a pass mark of 70 percent across all assessments. The overall qualification grade is Distinction for 90 to 100 percent, Merit for 80 to 89 percent and Pass for 70 to 79 percent. Because the synoptic is worth 30 percent, a weak result affects the grade even if you pass every unit assessment. Our how AAT assessments are graded explains how the grade is built.
Fees
AAT lists the synoptic at 72 pounds, against 67 pounds for each of the three unit assessments, which gives 273 pounds in total for the assessments. The qualification registration fee is separate at 187 pounds. These are AAT list prices that are not labelled with a year, and AAT says students do not pay AAT directly for assessments, so your training provider or assessment venue may charge a different amount. Check with them first. Our AAT exam fees guide covers the wider picture.
When results arrive
AAT's assessments page says synoptic results are released online six weeks after submission, while the grading and fees page gives four weeks. We could not reconcile the two, so plan for up to six weeks and check with AAT if you need the result by a date.
Resits
The Level 2 specification says the qualification is not subject to re-sit restrictions, and that only your highest result counts towards your grade. We could not find an official statement of waiting periods or resit fees, so ask AAT or your provider. Our what to do if you fail an AAT exam guide has practical steps.
Booking
Assessments are computer-based and are run by training providers or assessment venues. Book through your provider, and see our AAT exam dates guide for dates.
