Project Management Qualifications Dublin: PRINCE2, PMP and APM Compared
What PeopleCert, PMI and APM say on their own pages about PRINCE2, PMP and the APM qualifications, so you can compare prerequisites and formats.
If you are searching for project management qualifications Dublin employers recognise, you will quickly meet three names: PRINCE2, PMP and the APM qualifications. They are not interchangeable. Each is owned by a different body, built around a different idea of what a project manager does, and assessed in a different way. This guide sets out what each body's own public pages say, so you can compare like with like. It does not rank them, because the right choice depends on your role, your employer and your experience.
Everything below comes from the awarding bodies' own pages (PMI, PeopleCert and APM) as read for this article. The PeopleCert and APM pages showed no "last updated" date other than a 2026 copyright notice, and details such as exam format change from time to time, so check each page again before you book anything. We have left out fees and pass rates deliberately.
Start with the question, not the acronym
Before comparing certificates, it helps to be clear about what you need. Our suggestion: write down three things first. Does your employer or client ask for a named qualification? Do you already have project experience, or are you starting out? And do you want a method you can apply (a set of defined roles, stages and documents) or a broad professional credential that is not tied to one method? The answers will point you towards different options below. For a wider checklist on judging any training provider, see our guide to how to choose and check a professional training provider in Dublin.
PRINCE2 (PeopleCert)
PRINCE2 is a project management method. The public pages for the current version (PRINCE2 7) are published by PeopleCert, and there are two core levels.
PRINCE2 7 Foundation
- What the page says it is for: learning the principles of a best-practice method; the page describes it as suitable for any career stage.
- Prerequisites: the page does not list any.
- Exam format shown: 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, with a minimum required score of 60%.
- Renewal: the page says certification is renewed every 3 years, which needs 60 CPD points, or you can pass an exam in another course from the same product suite before your renewal date.
PRINCE2 7 Practitioner
- What the page says it is for: learning to apply and tailor PRINCE2 7 to a project and lead project teams.
- Prerequisites: the page says candidates must have completed one of a listed set of certifications. The list includes PRINCE2 7 Foundation, earlier PRINCE2 Foundation or Practitioner editions, PMP, CAPM, APM's PPQ and PMQ, IPMA Levels A to D, and two CSPM certifications.
- Exam format shown: 56 questions and sub-questions worth 70 marks, 150 minutes, open book, with a minimum required score of 60%.
- Renewal: the page says certification is subject to renewal, with 60 CPD points needed, or passing another exam in the same suite.
Notice the interesting detail: the Practitioner page accepts a PMP as a route in. If you already hold a PMP, you may not need to start again at Foundation. Confirm the prerequisite list on the PeopleCert page before booking, because it can change.
PMP (Project Management Institute)
The Project Management Professional (PMP) is a credential awarded by PMI. Unlike a course-based certificate, it has experience and education requirements before you can sit the exam. The PMI page, as shown at the time of writing, says you need one of four combinations:
- a high school diploma (or equivalent) plus 5 years of project management experience;
- an associate degree or vocational diploma plus 4 years;
- a bachelor's degree or higher plus 3 years; or
- a bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center programme plus 2 years.
The page says the experience must fall within the last 10 years, and it also lists 35 hours of project management training as a requirement (the page says an active CAPM certification also satisfies it, and that from 1 December 2026 live instructor-led classes must come from an approved provider type). The exam is shown as 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks, delivered at a test centre or online, and the page says you may take it up to three times in one year.
Our own guide to PMP eligibility and PDU requirements goes further into how the credential is maintained after you pass, so we will not repeat that here. The key contrast with PRINCE2 is that PMP is an experience-gated credential, while PRINCE2 Foundation lists no prerequisites.
APM qualifications (Association for Project Management)
The Association for Project Management (APM) offers two entry-level qualifications that are not tied to a single method.
Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ)
- Who it is for, per the page: people wanting a broad understanding of the principles of the profession.
- Prerequisites: the page says you do not need any prior knowledge or experience.
- Format shown: a one-hour, 60-question, multiple-choice exam, which the page says can be sat online in a classroom run by an accredited provider, online from home with a remote live invigilator, or through APM's open online exams for self-study. The page lists it at SCQF Level 6, which is a Scottish framework level; the page we read gave no Irish National Framework of Qualifications equivalent.
Project Management Qualification (PMQ)
- Who it is for, per the page: candidates most likely working in a project environment with 2 to 3 years of experience, as well as people on a project management apprenticeship or degree.
- Prerequisites: no formal entry requirements are listed.
- Format shown: a 2.5-hour online exam of 40 questions worth 90 marks, mixing multiple-response, select-from-list, short-response and long-response questions, with an optional break of up to 30 minutes between the two parts.
- Validity: the page does not say how long a result remains valid.

Practical points for Dublin professionals
- Check what your employer actually asks for. Job adverts and tender documents sometimes name a qualification. The bodies' pages cannot tell you which one a particular Dublin employer prefers, so ask.
- Look at the maintenance burden. PeopleCert says PRINCE2 certification is subject to renewal (60 CPD points or another exam from the same suite). Check PMI's own pages for what keeping a PMP current involves, and work out the ongoing time commitment, not just the exam.
- Match the credential to your stage. A beginner with no experience cannot sit the PMP under the rules shown, while PRINCE2 Foundation and the APM PFQ list no prerequisites.
- If you are moving from technical or finance work into project leadership, soft skills matter too. Our article on leadership and management CPD for finance professionals covers that side.
- Keep evidence. Whichever route you choose, keep your certificates, exam confirmations and any CPD records in one place.

Frequently asked questions
Which project management qualification should I take first?
The bodies' own pages do not rank their qualifications against each other. Based on what they show, PRINCE2 Foundation and the APM PFQ list no prerequisites, so they are the most open starting points, while the PMP requires experience and training before you can sit it. Choose based on what your employer or clients expect.
Do I need PRINCE2 Foundation before Practitioner?
The PeopleCert Practitioner page says completion of one of a list of certifications is required. Foundation is on the list, as are PMP, CAPM and several other certifications, so check the current list on the PeopleCert page before booking.
Does PRINCE2 expire?
The PeopleCert pages say certification is renewed every 3 years (Foundation) or is subject to renewal (Practitioner), using 60 CPD points or by passing another exam from the same suite. Confirm the current rule on the PeopleCert site.
Are these qualifications regulated in Ireland?
The pages we read are international or UK body pages and do not say anything about Irish regulation or recognition. We have not verified how these awards sit on the Irish framework, so ask the awarding body if you need that.
Whatever you choose, confirm the exam format, prerequisites and renewal rules on the awarding body's own page on the day you decide.
