The Power BI Data Analyst PL-300 certification is Microsoft's role-based credential for people who prepare, model, visualise and secure data in Power BI. This guide may be useful if Power BI is part of a finance or reporting team's training plans. This guide summarises only what Microsoft's own Learn pages say, including the dates shown on them, and flags where the pages are silent. If you are mapping a wider learning plan for a finance team, our guide to finance training courses in Dublin is a useful companion.

What the certification page says

The certification is called Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate, and it is earned through exam PL-300. The page we read (last updated 20 April 2026) lists it as an intermediate-level certification for the data analyst role. It shows no retirement notice. It describes the candidate as someone who delivers actionable insights from available data, provides business value through easy-to-understand visualisations, and enables self-service analytics. It adds that candidates should be proficient in Power Query and DAX.

The practical details given on that page are:

  • Duration: 100 minutes. The exam is proctored and may include interactive components.
  • Languages: English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Korean, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Chinese (Traditional) and Italian.
  • Renewal: every 12 months. The page says renewal is free and is done by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
  • Retakes: a failed attempt can be retried 24 hours later; the page says the wait for subsequent retakes varies.
  • Price: not shown. The page says it depends on the country or region where the exam is proctored.

The skills measured

The study guide for the exam is headed "Skills measured as of April 20, 2026" and shows a last-updated date of 20 March 2026. It groups the skills into four areas with weightings:

Skill areaWeighting on the page
Prepare the data25-30%
Model the data25-30%
Visualize and analyze the data25-30%
Manage and secure Power BI15-20%

Three of the four areas carry the same weighting; in our view, that means there is no area to skip. Here is what each one covers, as the study guide lists it.

Prepare the data

This area covers connecting to data sources or a shared semantic model, choosing between DirectLake, DirectQuery and Import, and creating parameters. It also covers profiling and cleaning data, resolving null values and import errors, and transforming data: pivoting and unpivoting, merging and appending queries, and creating fact and dimension tables.

Model the data

This area covers designing a data model, including relationship cardinality and cross-filter direction, a common date table and role-playing dimensions. It includes DAX: single aggregation measures, the CALCULATE function, time intelligence, semi-additive measures and calculation groups. It also covers optimising performance, including using Performance Analyzer and the DAX query view.

Visualize and analyze the data

This covers building reports, enhancing them for usability and storytelling (bookmarks, tooltips, drillthrough, accessibility and mobile design), and identifying patterns and trends with tools such as grouping, binning, clustering, forecasting and outlier detection. The 2026 outline also lists Copilot tasks in this area, for example creating a narrative visual or a new report page with Copilot.

Manage and secure Power BI

This covers workspaces and apps, distribution methods, subscriptions and data alerts, scheduled refresh, and knowing when a gateway is required. It also covers security: workspace roles, item-level access, row-level security and sensitivity labels.

What changed in the April 2026 update

The study guide includes a change log comparing the outline before and after 20 April 2026. It records "no change" at the group level for three areas and marks minor changes to some sub-sections: getting or connecting to data, enhancing reports for usability and storytelling, and creating and managing workspaces and assets. The page also says most questions cover generally available features, although preview features may appear if they are commonly used, and that localised versions are typically updated about eight weeks after the English version. If you study in a language other than English, that lag matters.

The passing score

The study guide states a passing score of 700. The certification page we read did not show a passing score. The pages do not explain how the score is scaled, so we do not speculate about how many questions that represents.

Preparing as a finance professional

The pages do not recommend a particular route, so the following is our suggestion rather than anything Microsoft says. Start by reading the study guide line by line and marking each task as "I do this at work", "I have seen this" or "new to me". Spend your time on the third group. Because the certification page says candidates should be proficient in Power Query and DAX, any gaps in those two are likely to cost more than gaps in report formatting.

Row-level security and sensitivity labels sit in the security area. Row-level security and sensitivity labels are exam topics; how they apply to your own data is a question for your data protection adviser. Our guide to CPD training for finance professionals in Dublin covers how to fit technical learning like this into a broader development plan. Whether a vendor exam counts towards the hours of your professional body is a question for that body, and we suggest asking it in writing.

Keeping the credential current

Because renewal is every 12 months, the certificate needs diarising. Our suggestion: note the date you passed, set a reminder a few weeks before the 12 months end, and keep a record of each completed renewal assessment. Microsoft's page describes the renewal assessment as online and free, but check the live page for how the process works when you come to renew.
