The Investment Management Certificate (IMC) is the benchmark entry-level qualification for investment professionals in the UK. If you're working in or moving into fund management, wealth management, or the buy side more broadly, the IMC is likely to be on your path. Here's what it involves and how to approach the exams.

What Is the IMC?

The IMC is a Level 4 qualification awarded by the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI). It's the standard qualification required by UK investment management firms before their analysts, portfolio managers, or research professionals can be registered with the firm and the FCA.

The CFA Society UK endorses the IMC as a suitable prerequisite to CFA studies — meaning if you're planning to pursue the CFA Charter, the IMC is a natural first step that gives you useful groundwork. For a broader overview of CISI's qualifications landscape, see our CISI qualification guide.

Structure: Two Units

The IMC consists of two independent exams:

Unit 1 — The Investment Environment

Covers macroeconomics, financial markets and instruments, regulation of the UK financial services industry, and investment theory. This is generally considered the harder unit due to the breadth of economic content — you need to understand interest rate policy, inflation dynamics, and how they interact with equity and bond markets.

  • 100 multiple-choice questions
  • 2 hours
  • Pass mark: 70%

Unit 2 — Investment Practice

Covers portfolio construction, investment analysis, performance measurement, and client relationships. More practical and applied than Unit 1. Many candidates find Unit 2 more intuitive, especially those with any prior investment or accounting background.

  • 100 multiple-choice questions
  • 2 hours
  • Pass mark: 70%

You can sit the units in either order and as far apart as you like. Most candidates take Unit 2 first (easier) to build confidence, then tackle Unit 1.

How Hard Is the IMC?

The IMC is a professional exam, not a university module — the multiple-choice format with a 70% pass mark means you need consistent accuracy across a wide range of topics. Candidates without an economics background often find Unit 1 the bigger challenge, while those without investment experience can find portfolio theory in Unit 2 initially unfamiliar.

Most candidates budget 60–100 hours of study per unit for a first-sit pass. Allowing 3 months of part-time study per unit is a common approach.

IMC Exam Registration and Cost

Exams are registered through the CISI website and sat at Pearson VUE test centres. Sittings are available year-round. As of 2026, CISI member pricing for each unit is approximately £175–£200; non-member pricing is higher. If your employer is a CISI member firm, exam fees are often covered as part of training budgets.

Study Materials

The main official resource is the CISI's own IMC workbooks — detailed study texts written specifically for the exam. These are the most reliable source of content. Supplement them with:

  • CISI Revision Express — condensed revision notes available on the CISI website, useful for the final 2–3 weeks before the exam
  • Mock exams — CISI provides specimen papers; practising timed, full-length mocks is essential given the 70% pass mark
  • Financial news habit — the FT, Economist, or Bloomberg are useful context-builders for Unit 1's economic content, helping theory feel grounded in real events

IMC vs CFA: What's the Difference?

The IMC is a focused, UK-relevant qualification aimed at practitioners. The CFA is a global designation with three levels, ~900 hours of total study, and a much broader curriculum covering equity analysis, fixed income, alternatives, and ethics in depth.

The IMC takes most candidates 6–12 months. The CFA typically takes 3–5 years. Many investment professionals hold both: the IMC as an early-career mandatory qualification, and the CFA as a longer-term credential that signals deep expertise. Read our CFA qualification UK guide if you're considering both.

Career Roles That Require or Prefer the IMC

  • Investment analyst
  • Portfolio manager (junior level)
  • Equity research analyst
  • Wealth manager / private client adviser
  • Fund of funds analyst
  • Investment consultant
  • Multi-asset investment team roles

For roles in sales, operations, or compliance within investment management, other CISI qualifications (IOC, Diploma in Investment Compliance) may be more relevant than the IMC specifically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the IMC mandatory to work in investment management in the UK?

It is required by many (not all) UK investment management firms as a condition of employment or within a specified time of joining. The FCA's Training and Competence rules require firms to ensure their investment staff are appropriately qualified, and the IMC satisfies those requirements for many roles. Your employer will confirm what's required for your specific role.

Can I take the IMC as a career changer without a finance background?

Yes — the IMC has no formal entry requirements. Candidates come from all backgrounds. A degree in economics, maths, or finance is helpful but not required. Many career changers with accounting or legal backgrounds find the transition manageable with structured study.

How often can I resit if I fail?

CISI allows resits after a cooling-off period. There is no limit on the number of attempts, but each resit incurs the full exam fee. Most candidates pass within 1–2 attempts with adequate preparation.
