The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) is the UK's leading professional body for the securities and investment industry. If you're working in or moving into financial services — wealth management, private banking, investment operations, or financial planning — a CISI qualification is likely to be relevant to your career. Here's what they involve and which one to consider.

What Is the CISI?

Founded in 1992, the CISI has over 50,000 members globally and is widely recognised by regulators and employers across financial services. Its qualifications are designed for practitioners — people working in securities, investment, and financial planning roles — rather than aspiring accountants or management accountants (who would typically pursue ACCA or CIMA instead).

The CISI works closely with the FCA and is a Chartered body, meaning its membership carries weight with UK regulators and is increasingly recognised internationally.

The Main CISI Qualifications

CISI qualifications are structured across levels, broadly aligned to the UK's Regulated Qualifications Framework:

Introduction to Securities and Investment (Level 2)

The entry-level qualification. Covers the basics of financial markets, investment products, and financial services regulation. Popular as a first step for school leavers, career changers, or anyone in a support or operations role wanting to build their knowledge. One exam.

Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) — Level 3

For people working in investment operations (settlements, custody, fund administration). The IOC has several unit options; most roles require specific units rather than the full suite. A practical qualification for back and middle-office professionals.

Investment Management Certificate (IMC) — Level 4

The benchmark qualification for investment professionals in the UK. Two units: Unit 1 (economics and financial markets) and Unit 2 (investment practice). The IMC is a prerequisite for many buy-side roles and is recognised by the CFA Institute as a partial pathway towards the CFA charter. Our full IMC qualification guide covers the structure and exam preparation in more detail.

Diploma in Investment Compliance (Level 4)

For compliance professionals in financial services. Covers UK and international regulation, MiFID II, and the FCA regulatory framework.

Investment Advice Diploma (IAD) — Level 4

For retail investment advisers. Meeting RDR (Retail Distribution Review) requirements is mandatory for anyone providing regulated investment advice in the UK, and the IAD satisfies those requirements.

Chartered MCSI — Level 6/7

The flagship chartered designation, achieved via a portfolio of qualifications and work experience. Comparable in stature to chartered accountant status within the securities and investment world.

How Hard Are CISI Exams?

CISI exams are computer-based multiple-choice assessments. They're not as lengthy as ACCA or CFA exams, but they require solid technical knowledge of markets, products, and regulation. The IMC Unit 1 is generally considered the harder of the two IMC units due to its economic content. Pass rates are not publicly published by CISI for individual papers, but most candidates report needing 60–80 hours of preparation per unit for a first-sit pass.

CISI vs CFA: Which Should You Choose?

This is a common question for investment professionals. The short answer:

  • CISI — better suited to UK-based practitioners in wealth management, investment operations, and retail advice. More accessible, less time-intensive, regulator-recognised for specific UK roles.
  • CFA — the global gold standard for investment analysis and portfolio management. Three levels, 900+ hours of study, but globally portable and highly valued in buy-side roles. Read our CFA qualification guide to understand what's involved.

Many investment professionals hold both — starting with the IMC early in their career and pursuing the CFA over 3–4 years. They are complementary, not competing.

How to Register for CISI Qualifications

You can register directly on the CISI website (cisi.org). Some qualifications require you to be employed in a relevant role. Exam sittings are available throughout the year at Pearson VUE test centres across the UK.

Study materials are available directly from CISI (Revision Express workbooks) and from third-party providers. Classroom courses are available in London and other financial centres; most candidates study via self-directed online resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CISI membership worth it?

Yes, particularly if you work in a regulated financial services role in the UK. CISI membership demonstrates commitment to professional standards, is recognised by the FCA, and is often listed as a preference (or requirement) in job descriptions for wealth management and investment roles.

Can I study CISI qualifications without working in financial services?

Yes — most CISI qualifications are open to candidates regardless of employment status, though some require you to provide an employer reference. The Introduction to Securities and Investment in particular is widely taken by students and career changers.

How long does it take to complete CISI qualifications?

The Introduction to Securities and Investment can be completed in 4–8 weeks of part-time study. The IMC (both units) typically takes 4–6 months. The Chartered MCSI pathway is a multi-year journey depending on your starting qualifications.
