Finance Salaries by Sector: Financial Services vs Industry vs Practice 2026
How finance salaries compare across financial services, industry, and professional practice for ACCA and CIMA professionals.
Why Sector Matters More Than You Think
For qualified finance professionals, the choice of sector often has a larger impact on long-term earnings than the specific qualification held. An ACCA or CIMA member in investment banking in London can earn 2-3x the salary of an equally qualified colleague in local government - not because they are more skilled, but because their sector pays differently.
Financial Services: The Premium Sector
Banking, asset management, hedge funds, private equity, and insurance are the highest-paying environments for finance professionals. Newly qualified: £55,000-£75,000 in London. Senior roles (Finance Manager/Controller): £85,000-£130,000. CFO of a mid-sized financial services firm: £200,000-£500,000+. Bonus structures add 20-100% on top of base. The trade-off: long hours, high pressure, and a very competitive recruitment market.
Professional Practice (Big 4 and Mid-Tier)
Practice salaries are competitive but below financial services: newly qualified £42,000-£58,000 in London. The key benefit of practice is rapid skills development, a strong professional network, and qualification funding. Many practice professionals move to industry after 3-5 years for higher base salaries.
Industry (Corporates)
This is where the majority of ACCA and CIMA members work. Salaries vary enormously by company size and sector: FTSE 100 newly qualified: £45,000-£60,000. Mid-market (£50m-£500m revenue): £40,000-£55,000. SME: £35,000-£50,000. The benefit is clear progression paths, broader commercial exposure, and often better work-life balance than financial services.
Public Sector and NHS
Salaries are lower than private sector equivalents: newly qualified £32,000-£45,000. Finance directors in large NHS trusts or local authorities earn £90,000-£140,000. Compensating factors include defined benefit pension schemes, job security, and better work-life balance.
The Best Sector for Long-Term Earnings
Financial services wins on raw salary, but the difference narrows significantly above CFO/FD level when comparing equivalent responsibility. For many finance professionals, the right sector is the one that combines adequate compensation with work they find meaningful and sustainable.
