What Is a Finance Director?

A Finance Director (FD) is the most senior finance leader in many UK organisations, responsible for the overall financial strategy, reporting to the board, and leading the finance function. In listed companies and larger corporates, the equivalent title is CFO (Chief Financial Officer). The FD combines operational finance leadership with strategic business advisory at the highest level.

Finance Director vs CFO vs Financial Controller

The Financial Controller runs the operational finance function (month-end, accounts, controls). The Finance Director or CFO is accountable for financial strategy, investor relations, capital allocation, and board-level reporting. In practice, many SMEs use FD and CFO interchangeably. In FTSE companies, CFO is the more common title.

Key Responsibilities

Leading the finance function, presenting financial results to the board and investors, overseeing statutory audit and compliance, driving commercial strategy alongside the CEO, managing treasury and banking relationships, overseeing M&A due diligence and integration, and responsibility for financial risk management.

Qualifications

Virtually all Finance Directors hold ACA, ACCA, or CIMA. Many trained at Big Four or top-20 accountancy firms. An MBA is common but not required. Portfolio NED (Non-Executive Director) roles are increasingly common for experienced FDs as they progress their careers.

Finance Director Salary UK

FDs at SMEs earn 80,000-120,000 GBP. Mid-market FDs earn 100,000-150,000 GBP. FDs and CFOs at large corporates, FTSE companies, or PE-backed businesses earn 150,000-300,000 GBP and above with bonuses and equity. Fractional FD roles have grown significantly, offering flexibility at typically 800-1,500 GBP per day.

Career Path to FD

Qualified Accountant to Finance Manager, Financial Controller, Finance Director. Many FDs reach the role in their late 30s or early 40s, having spent 10-15 years post-qualification gaining broad commercial experience. PE-backed and high-growth tech companies tend to appoint younger FDs.

FAQ

Do you need to be ACA to become Finance Director?

No - while ACA is common, many successful FDs and CFOs are ACCA or CIMA qualified. The qualification matters less at FD level than commercial track record, board experience, and strategic credibility.
