ESG Investing — What It Is and How It Works in India
ESG investing explained for Indian investors and finance professionals: how ESG funds work, SEBI ESG regulations, BRSR, India's ESG indices, and ESG career opportunities.
ESG Investing — Overview
ESG investing incorporates Environmental, Social, and Governance factors into investment analysis and portfolio construction — alongside traditional financial analysis. The goal is to identify companies better positioned for long-term sustainability while avoiding those exposed to ESG-related risks.
How ESG Investing Works
1. Negative Screening (Exclusionary)
Excluding companies or sectors based on ESG criteria — e.g. excluding tobacco, weapons, or fossil fuel companies.
2. Positive Screening (Best-in-Class)
Selecting companies with the highest ESG scores within each sector. Retains diversification while favouring ESG leaders.
3. ESG Integration
Systematically incorporating ESG data into financial analysis alongside traditional metrics. Most commonly used by institutional investors.
4. Thematic ESG Investing
Investing in specific ESG themes: clean energy, water, sustainable agriculture. Examples include clean energy ETFs and green bond funds.
5. Impact Investing
Investments specifically targeting measurable positive social or environmental outcomes alongside financial returns.
ESG Investing in India
- SEBI mandates: SEBI requires the top 1,000 listed companies to file a BRSR (Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report) annually
- ESG mutual funds: Indian AMCs including SBI, HDFC, Axis, Kotak, and Mirae all offer ESG equity funds
- Nifty 100 ESG Index: NSE's benchmark for Indian ESG equity performance
- Green bonds: India has a growing green bond market with a SEBI-published framework
BRSR — India's ESG Reporting Framework
The Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) is India's primary ESG framework for listed companies — mandatory for the top 1,000 NSE/BSE companies. It covers nine principles aligned with the National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct and includes quantitative disclosures on energy, emissions, water, waste, and governance.
