ESG in ACCA — What ACCA Students Need to Know
How ESG features in the ACCA qualification: which ACCA papers cover ESG, sustainability reporting standards, and what ACCA students need to know about ESG for their exams and careers.
ESG in the ACCA Qualification
ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) has been integrated across the ACCA qualification, reflecting the profession's shift toward sustainability reporting. ACCA students need to understand ESG concepts for their exams — and increasingly, for their professional careers.
Which ACCA Papers Cover ESG?
| ACCA Paper | ESG Relevance |
|---|---|
| Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) | Core ESG coverage — integrated reporting, IFRS S1/S2, GRI, TCFD, non-financial reporting |
| Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA) | Assurance over sustainability reports; ESG audit procedures and reporting standards |
| Strategic Business Leader (SBL) | ESG strategy, stakeholder management, corporate governance including ESG oversight |
| Advanced Financial Management (AFM) | ESG in investment decisions, green bonds, sustainability-linked finance |
| Performance Management (PM) | Non-financial KPIs, triple bottom line reporting, sustainability metrics |
Key ESG Frameworks ACCA Students Need to Know
IFRS S1 and IFRS S2
The ISSB (International Sustainability Standards Board) published IFRS S1 (General Sustainability Disclosures) and IFRS S2 (Climate-related Disclosures) in 2023. These are heavily tested in SBR and AAA.
Integrated Reporting (IR Framework)
Requires companies to report on six capitals: financial, manufactured, intellectual, human, social and relationship, and natural. Tested in SBR and SBL.
GRI (Global Reporting Initiative)
The most widely used global sustainability reporting framework. ACCA students should understand GRI's structure and how it compares to ISSB standards.
TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures)
TCFD recommendations cover governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics. IFRS S2 is built on TCFD foundations.
ESG Exam Tips for ACCA Students
- In SBR, questions on integrated reporting appear regularly — understand the purpose of each framework and how they differ
- In AAA, prepare for scenario questions on providing assurance over a sustainability report using ISAE 3000
- In SBL, connect ESG to board responsibilities, stakeholder management, and strategic risk
