What Is the ACCA Practising Certificate?

The ACCA Practising Certificate (or Practising Certificate and Audit Qualification — PCAQ — where audit is included) is a licence that allows ACCA members to carry out public practice work. Without it, ACCA members cannot offer services such as statutory audit, certain tax advice, and insolvency work to the public.

Who Needs It?

You need an ACCA Practising Certificate if you want to: set up your own accountancy practice; offer statutory audit services; offer insolvency services; or sign off certain regulated professional work. ACCA members working in industry or the public sector as employees do not need a practising certificate.

How to Get It

To apply for an ACCA Practising Certificate you must: be a fully qualified ACCA member; have at least three years of relevant experience working under an ACCA practising certificate holder or equivalent; provide evidence of relevant CPD; and agree to meet ACCA's professional indemnity insurance requirements. If you want to include an audit qualification, you must also have sufficient audit experience.

Costs and Annual Requirements

ACCA charges an annual fee for holding a practising certificate. Certificate holders must maintain their professional indemnity insurance, complete their annual CPD return, and comply with ACCA's money laundering regulations where applicable. ACCA carries out practice assurance reviews of certificate holders on a periodic basis.

Alternatives to Sole Practitioner Status

Rather than obtaining a practising certificate immediately, many ACCA members join existing accountancy practices as employed staff, working under the firm's own regulatory permissions. This provides practical experience before setting up independently. Learn more about the ACCA qualification and career paths.
