ACCA Oxford Brookes BSc: How the OBU Degree Works
A complete guide to the ACCA Oxford Brookes University BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting — eligibility, the RAP, and whether it is worth doing.
What Is the ACCA OBU BSc?
The ACCA Oxford Brookes University BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting is a bachelor's degree available to ACCA students who have completed the Applied Skills level (all six papers) and the Professional Ethics Module. The degree is awarded by Oxford Brookes University and is a globally recognised undergraduate qualification that runs alongside — not instead of — the full ACCA qualification.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the OBU BSc, you must: have passed all nine ACCA Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers (or hold exemptions), have completed the ACCA Professional Ethics Module, and register with OBU directly. You can register at any point after completing the Applied Skills papers — you do not need to have finished Strategic Professional first.
The Research and Analysis Project (RAP)
The core requirement for the OBU BSc is the Research and Analysis Project (RAP) — a 7,500-word research report on a topic related to an organisation of your choice. You select one of 20 Oxford Brookes topic areas, apply it to a real organisation, and submit the report along with a Skills and Learning Statement. The RAP is assessed by OBU — not ACCA — and must meet academic standards for pass at degree level.
Is the OBU BSc Worth Doing?
For most ACCA students, the honest answer is: it depends on your career context. If you do not hold a UK university degree and work in markets where a degree is important for career progression or visa applications, the OBU BSc adds significant credential value. If you already hold a degree, the incremental value is lower — most UK employers are more interested in your ACCA progress than whether you hold a second bachelor's degree. The OBU BSc is particularly valued in some African and Asian markets where degree credentials carry significant weight.
How Long Does the RAP Take?
Most students complete the RAP in 3-6 months of part-time work alongside their job and ACCA studies. The workload is substantial — choosing a good topic and organisation makes a significant difference to how smoothly the research process flows.
