AAT Sample Assessments and Practice Resources: Where to Find Them
AAT students can find practice assessments in the AAT Lifelong Learning Portal, and AAT publishes sample assessments with mark schemes for training providers. Here is what each one is.
AAT gives students and training providers several kinds of practice material, and they are easy to confuse. Practice assessments sit in the AAT Lifelong Learning Portal for students registered on the qualification, while AAT also publishes Sample Assessment and Mark Scheme documents, known as SAMS, that give an indication of the question type and level of detail expected. This guide explains what each resource is, where AAT says to find it and what we could not confirm, including whether any of it is free. For the technical set-up needed to run a practice assessment, see our AAT practice assessment technical requirements guide. For how real assessments are graded read how AAT assessments are graded.

Practice assessments in the Lifelong Learning Portal
AAT's student answers page says you can access practice assessments in the AAT Lifelong Learning Portal and that you need to be registered for the qualification you are studying. AAT's technical requirements page describes the route: open the Portal, choose your qualification and unit, and select the practice assessments option. AAT's student magazine describes the Portal as holding practice assessments and explanations for the AAT qualifications. Run a practice assessment on the device you plan to use for the real one, and see our AAT practice assessment technical requirements guide for the requirements.
The Excel requirement for one unit
AAT notes that the practice assessment for the Level 3 unit Management Accounting Techniques needs a Windows computer with Microsoft Excel. That matches the real assessment, which uses spreadsheets. If you only have a tablet or a Mac, check the technical page before you start.
Green Light tests
AAT's student magazine describes Green Light tests as practice sets of questions designed to highlight gaps in your knowledge, taken in the run-up to your exams. We could not read AAT's own page on them, so we cannot say which levels they cover or what they cost. Ask your training provider or check the Portal.
Sample assessments and mark schemes
AAT's qualification specifications page lists Sample Assessment and Mark Scheme documents for training providers. AAT says they provide an indication of the question type and level of expected detail. The examples linked from that page are single-unit documents, such as the Level 2 Introduction to Bookkeeping, the Level 3 Business Awareness and the Level 4 Applied Management Accounting unit from the previous Level 4 diploma. They are not full-qualification sets. We could not confirm that AAT points students, rather than providers, to this page, so ask your provider first.
What we could not confirm
AAT does not say, on the pages we could read, how closely practice assessments match the real ones, and it does not say whether any practice material is free. AAT also offers a Skillcheck tool, but we did not read it. Treat practice results as a guide to your gaps, not a prediction of your result.
Using practice material well
Use practice assessments to find weak topics, then revisit the unit content and attempt the assessment again. Check the pass mark, which AAT sets at 70 percent for all assessments, and read the mark scheme to see how answers are credited. Our AAT exam tips cover how to approach the sitting, and our how AAT assessments are graded explains how unit results combine into a grade.
Before you book the real assessment
Confirm dates with your provider and check whether you will sit at a venue or remotely. Our AAT exam dates guide lists dates, and the Level 2 synoptic guide explains the one synoptic assessment under the current qualifications.
