AAT Assessments: The Current Exam and Booking Guide

Updated for 2026: AAT calls its exams assessments. They are computer based and arranged through approved training providers or assessment venues.

The different assessment types

Assessments may be wholly computer marked, partly computer and partly human marked, or wholly human marked. That affects when results are available. Your provider should confirm the format, permitted materials and result timeframe for each unit.

Which qualifications have a synoptic assessment?

Under Q2022, the Level 2 Certificate in Accounting includes the Business Environment synoptic assessment. The current Level 3 Diploma in Accounting and Q2022 Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting use individual unit assessments and do not have a separate qualification synoptic assessment.

How to book

Confirm your AAT registration and assessment venue before choosing a date. Fees paid to AAT or an assessment venue are separate from tuition fees, and venues may charge an administration or remote-invigilation amount.

• Check the exact unit and qualification version in MyAAT.
• Ask about centre and remote availability.
• Confirm identification, calculator, spreadsheet and permitted-material rules.
• Read the cancellation and rescheduling terms before paying.

A practical preparation sequence

• Complete the syllabus once without leaving major gaps.
• Attempt topic questions without notes.
• Review errors and write the rule or process you missed.
• Complete timed mixed practice and full mocks.
• Book only when performance is consistent, not after one unusually strong mock.

The current AAT accounting route

• Level 2 Certificate in Accounting: Introduction to Bookkeeping, Principles of Bookkeeping Controls, Principles of Costing and The Business Environment. Level 2 includes the qualification's synoptic assessment.
• Level 3 Diploma in Accounting: Business Awareness, Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements, Management Accounting Techniques and Tax Processes for Businesses. These are four individual unit assessments.
• Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting (Q2022): three mandatory units and two optional units chosen from five. It contains five unit assessments and no qualification synoptic assessment.

The September 2026 Level 4 change

Registration for the Q2022 Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting closes on 31 August 2026. Students already registered have until 31 July 2028 to complete its assessments.

The new Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians opens for registration and first teaching on 1 September 2026. It has five mandatory units. Students should confirm with their training provider which qualification they are registered for before choosing materials or booking assessments.
