What Is ACCA AA?

ACCA Audit and Assurance (AA) — formerly F8 — is an Applied Skills paper covering the external audit process from planning through evidence gathering to completion and reporting. It is the prerequisite for Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA) at Strategic Professional level.

Exam Format

Three hours. Section A: 30 OT questions worth 60 marks (2 marks each). Section B: two 20-mark scenario-based constructed response questions. Both sections are compulsory.

Core Syllabus Areas

Audit framework and regulation: the purpose of external audit, the regulatory environment, the ACCA Code of Ethics, and ethical threats and safeguards. Risk assessment and planning: the audit risk model (inherent, control, detection risk), materiality (planning and performance), audit strategy, and analytical procedures. Internal controls: evaluating design and operation of control systems, identifying weaknesses, explaining consequences, and recommending specific improvements. Audit evidence: ISA 500 procedures (inspection, observation, inquiry, recalculation, re-performance, confirmation, analytical procedures), audit assertions, and evidence for specific balances. Completion and reporting: going concern, subsequent events, written representations, and audit report types (unmodified, qualified, adverse, disclaimer).

How to Pass AA First Time

Apply knowledge to the specific scenario — generic risks and procedures score very few marks. Every audit procedure must be specific enough for a junior auditor to execute from your instruction alone. Invest equal preparation time in Section A (60 marks) and Section B.
