Study ACCA AFM Advanced Financial Management with Learnsignal
In short
ACCA Advanced Financial Management (AFM) tests the application of advanced corporate finance theory — treasury strategy, M&A valuation, complex derivatives, and financial risk management — to real-world business decisions.
What Is ACCA AFM?
ACCA Advanced Financial Management (AFM) is an Options paper at Strategic Professional level. It extends FM at Applied Skills level into advanced corporate treasury, investment appraisal, and financial risk management — the territory of a CFO or Head of Treasury. The paper is heavily quantitative and requires confident application of complex formulas alongside written advisory commentary.
AFM Exam Format
Section A (50 marks): One compulsory question — a substantial corporate finance scenario involving a major investment decision, restructuring, acquisition, or complex risk management situation. Requires quantitative work and written advisory commentary.
Section B (50 marks): Two 25-mark compulsory questions testing specific areas including APV, derivatives pricing, capital structure theory, M&A valuation, or emerging areas such as Islamic finance or AI in finance.
Core Syllabus Areas
Advanced Investment Appraisal: Adjusted Present Value (APV) — separating base-case NPV from financing side effects (tax shields, subsidised loans, issue costs) — is one of the most frequently examined techniques. Real options using the Black-Scholes model is also regularly tested.
Mergers and Acquisitions: Valuation methodologies (DCF, P/E multiples, dividend yield, NAV), synergy theory, post-merger value, takeover regulation, defence strategies, and the evaluation of cash vs share offers from both acquirer and target perspectives.
Corporate Risk Management: Foreign exchange risk (transaction, translation, economic exposure), interest rate risk, and commodity price risk. Hedging instruments — forward contracts, money market hedges, currency futures, currency options, and interest rate swaps — applied in numerical scenarios.
Capital Structure and Financing: Modigliani-Miller with and without tax, trade-off theory, pecking order theory, dividend policy, share buybacks, and the cost of capital in complex structures.

How to Pass AFM First Time
Build confidence with core calculations through early, repetitive practice — APV, swap pricing, futures hedging, M&A valuation — until you can execute them reliably under exam pressure. Do not ignore written advisory elements: these marks differentiate passing from failing candidates. Manage time strictly across both sections.
