Workplace & HR Compliance Training in Ireland & UK: The Complete Guide
Every Learnsignal guide to workplace compliance in Ireland and the UK, organised by topic — employment law, data privacy, premises security, and workplace health & safety — in one place.
"Workplace compliance" covers two things that get handled separately in most organisations but land on the same desk: employment law and HR compliance on one side, workplace health & safety on the other. This guide brings together everything Learnsignal has published on both, so managers and HR teams in Ireland and the UK can see the full picture in one place, rather than treating them as two unrelated checklists.
Employment law is changing faster than most employers can track
The UK's Employment Rights Act 2025 is being phased in over 2026 and 2027, and the changes are substantial. Statutory sick pay now applies from day one of illness (previously day four), and paternity and parental leave became day-one rights in April 2026. Dismissal for taking part in industrial action became automatically unfair, with no time limit for bringing a claim, from February 2026.
The biggest change is still to land: from January 2027, employees will be able to claim unfair dismissal after just 6 months of service, down from the current 2-year qualifying period — and the cap on unfair dismissal compensation is being removed entirely. Dismissal and rehire protections strengthen the same month. For the full timeline, see Employment Rights Act 2025: What's Changing for UK Employers.
Data privacy and monitoring in the workplace
Two areas trip up HR teams more than most: responding properly to a Data Subject Access Request, and getting employee monitoring right without overstepping. Both carry real regulatory exposure if handled casually. Start with Data Subject Access Requests: An HR Guide to Handling DSARs and Employee Privacy and Monitoring at Work: Getting the Balance Right.
Premises security: Martyn's Law
Martyn's Law — the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act — introduces a new duty for employers whose premises can hold 200 or more people at once (staff, contractors and visitors all count). Standard Tier applies from 200–799 people and requires evacuation, invacuation, lockdown and communication procedures. Enhanced Tier applies at 800 or more and adds monitoring, movement management, physical and information security, a named senior responsible individual, and a compliance document submitted to the Security Industry Authority. Penalties differ sharply between tiers, so knowing which one applies to your premises matters. More in Martyn's Law: What Employers Need to Know About the New Premises Duty.
Right to work checks
Getting right to work checks wrong — whether by skipping them or doing them incorrectly — carries civil and criminal liability for employers in the UK. Right to Work Checks: A UK Employer's Guide covers what a compliant check actually looks like.
The wider HR compliance calendar
Beyond the headline changes, three recurring obligations catch managers out because they're easy to forget between cycles: gender pay gap reporting, which requires ongoing action planning rather than a once-a-year data pull; TUPE, which governs employee rights whenever a business or service transfers to a new employer; and whistleblowing, where mishandling a disclosure — even unintentionally — can expose an organisation to a claim. See Gender Pay Gap Reporting and Action Planning in the UK, TUPE Essentials for Managers, and Handling Whistleblowing Disclosures: A Guide for Managers.
Workplace health & safety fundamentals
Alongside the HR and employment law side, every employer carries physical health & safety duties. The core mandatory areas are manual handling, fire safety, and — for anyone working with hazardous substances or at height — COSHH and working-at-height training:

Building one compliance programme, not two
The practical answer for most employers is to stop treating HR compliance and workplace safety as separate tracks, owned by different people on different spreadsheets. The same manager who needs to understand the Employment Rights Act changes is usually also responsible for making sure the team's fire safety and manual handling training is current, that DSARs are answered on time, and that a Martyn's Law obligation hasn't quietly been missed because nobody re-checked the premises capacity after a refurbishment. Bringing employment law, data privacy, premises security and physical safety into one tracked programme is what actually closes the gap before an inspection, an audit, or a claim finds it first.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does the Employment Rights Act 2025 fully take effect?
In stages through 2026 and 2027. Several provisions — day-one sick pay and parental leave, and automatic unfair dismissal for industrial action — are already in force. The 6-month unfair dismissal qualifying period and uncapped compensation are due from January 2027.
Does Martyn's Law apply to my business?
If your premises can hold 200 or more people at the same time — staff and contractors included, not just visitors — it applies. Below that threshold, it doesn't.
Is workplace health & safety training a legal requirement or just best practice?
It's a legal requirement in both Ireland and the UK — the specific obligations vary by role and hazard, which is exactly why manual handling, fire safety, COSHH and working-at-height training are treated as mandatory rather than optional across most workplaces.
