The Range of ACCA Career Paths
ACCA opens doors across a wider range of roles than almost any other professional qualification. Unlike some specialist qualifications, ACCA is valued in audit, tax, financial reporting, management accounting, FP&A, treasury, internal audit, and commercial finance — across practice, industry, financial services, and the public sector. This breadth is one of ACCA's most significant advantages.
In Practice (Accounting Firms)
Audit: from audit junior to audit partner, working with clients ranging from SMEs to FTSE 100. Tax: personal tax, corporate tax, VAT, international tax — in general practice or specialist tax firms. Advisory: corporate finance, restructuring, forensic, transaction services, and ESG advisory. Practice salaries range from approximately £25,000 for juniors to £500,000+ for equity partners.
In Industry (Corporates)
Financial Controller: responsible for the accuracy and completeness of financial statements, leading a finance team. Finance Director / CFO: strategic leadership of the entire finance function. Financial Reporting Manager: technical accounting, group consolidation, statutory accounts. FP&A Manager: budgeting, forecasting, and commercial analysis. Treasury Manager: cash management, FX, and debt management.
Financial Services
Finance roles in banking, insurance, asset management, and fintech. ACCA is well recognised in financial services alongside CFA (for investment roles) and actuarial qualifications.
Public Sector
NHS finance, local government, central government departments, and public bodies all employ ACCA-qualified professionals. CIPFA (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy) is also valued in this sector.
Salary Ranges for ACCA Members
Newly qualified (UK): £38,000–£55,000. Mid-career FC (5–10 years PQ): £65,000–£95,000. Finance Director: £90,000–£180,000. CFO (large company): £150,000–£500,000+. These vary significantly by sector, company size, and geography — London and the South East command the highest premiums.
