What Is a Financial Controller?
A Financial Controller (FC) is a senior finance role responsible for overseeing all accounting operations. The FC owns the integrity of financial statements, the month-end close process, internal controls, and regulatory compliance. In smaller companies the FC performs many CFO duties; in larger organisations they manage a team while the CFO focuses on strategy.
FC vs CFO vs Finance Director
The Financial Controller is the senior operational finance leader. The CFO or Finance Director sits above and has broader strategic responsibility including investor relations, M&A, and board reporting. Many CFOs were FCs earlier in their careers.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Controllers own: monthly and annual financial close, statutory accounts preparation, oversight of AP and AR functions, treasury and cash management, external audit management, tax compliance, internal controls review, and managing the finance team.
Qualifications
ACA (ICAEW), ACCA, or CIMA is expected for virtually all FC roles. Many FCs trained in Big Four or top-20 firms before moving into industry. A few years as Senior Accountant or Finance Manager typically precede the FC role.
