Finance in the Technology Sector

Technology companies have some of the most analytically demanding finance roles available. The combination of high growth, subscription revenue models, complex software revenue recognition, stock-based compensation, and global operations makes tech finance intellectually stimulating and commercially significant. Both CIMA and ACCA are valued, but CIMA's commercial and strategic focus suits many tech finance roles particularly well.

Key Finance Concepts in Technology

SaaS metrics: Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR), Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR), Net Revenue Retention (NRR), Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), and Lifetime Value (LTV) are the core commercial metrics in subscription software businesses — not traditional P&L metrics. Revenue recognition: IFRS 15 and ASC 606 have complex application for software licences, implementation services, and support contracts. Stock-based compensation (IFRS 2): a significant P&L item for most tech companies, requiring both accounting knowledge and understanding of the company's equity incentive structure.

Finance Roles in Technology

FP&A: forecasting ARR, churn, and unit economics in high-growth environments. Commercial Finance: customer and product profitability, pricing analysis, go-to-market ROI. Finance Business Partner: supporting product, engineering, and sales teams with financial insight. Treasury: managing cash for high-growth companies, often with complex international cash structures. Group Reporting: consolidating global tech company structures, often involving US GAAP to IFRS reconciliations for international groups.

Start-up vs Scale-up vs Corporate Tech Finance

Start-up finance (Series A–C) involves building processes from scratch, wearing multiple hats, and often working with incomplete data. Scale-up finance (post Series C to IPO) involves building a proper finance function while the business still moves fast. Corporate tech finance (post-IPO or at large companies like Microsoft, Google, Amazon) is more structured and specialised. Each stage offers different experiences and compensation profiles.
