What is CPA Ireland?

CPA Ireland — formally the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland — is one of Ireland's main professional accountancy bodies. It awards the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation, which is recognised throughout Ireland and internationally as a mark of professional competence in accounting and finance.

Founded in 1926, CPA Ireland has thousands of members working across practice, industry, the public sector, and financial services. The CPA designation is particularly well established in the SME and practice sector in Ireland.

What Does a CPA Do?

CPA Ireland members work across the full range of accounting and finance roles — from sole practitioners and practice partners to finance directors and CFOs in industry. Key areas of work include:

  • Financial accounting and reporting
  • Audit and assurance
  • Tax advisory and compliance
  • Management accounting and financial management
  • Business advisory and insolvency
  • Public sector accounting

CPA Ireland Qualification

The CPA qualification is structured across four stages — Foundation, Strand 1, Strand 2, and Strand 3 — covering accounting, tax, law, audit, financial management, and strategy. Graduates and school leavers can enter at different stages depending on their existing qualifications.

Exam exemptions are available for graduates in accounting, business, and related disciplines. University graduates with an accounting degree may be eligible for exemptions from Foundation and Strand 1 papers.

CPA vs Other Irish Accounting Bodies

Ireland has several professional accounting bodies, which can create confusion for those starting out. The main bodies are:

  • CPA Ireland — Certified Public Accountant
  • Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI) — awards the ACA qualification
  • ACCA — Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK-based but widely used in Ireland)
  • CIMA — Chartered Institute of Management Accountants

CPA Ireland is particularly strong in the SME and practice sector, while ACA (Chartered Accountants Ireland) has traditionally dominated large practice and FDI companies. ACCA has a very strong presence in multinational and financial services environments.

Is CPA Ireland Recognised Internationally?

CPA Ireland has Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) with accountancy bodies in several countries, including the United States (via CPA Exam reciprocity arrangements), Canada, Australia, and the Philippines. This allows CPA Ireland members to gain recognition in those jurisdictions more easily than starting from scratch.

Studying with CPA Ireland

CPA Ireland offers study support through approved colleges across Ireland and online learning options. The exams are held in spring and autumn each year. Most full-time students qualify within three years; part-time routes typically take four to five years.
