US CMA After CA — Should Chartered Accountants Pursue the CMA?
Should Indian Chartered Accountants do the US CMA? Exemptions available, career benefits, salary uplift, and how US CMA compares to other post-CA qualifications.
US CMA After CA — Is It Worth It?
Indian Chartered Accountants (CAs) considering the US CMA often ask whether the additional credential adds meaningful career value — given that CA is already a respected and rigorous qualification. The short answer: yes, for specific career paths, especially in MNC finance and global management roles.
Does the CA Give Any US CMA Exemptions?
The US CMA (awarded by the IMA) does not offer formal paper-by-paper exemptions for Indian CA holders. You must still pass both Part 1 and Part 2 of the CMA exam.
However, in practice, CAs who pursue the CMA report significantly shorter study times — typically 100–130 hours per part rather than 150–170 hours — because the CA already covers substantial management accounting, financial reporting, and financial analysis content.
Why CAs Pursue the US CMA
- Global MNC positioning: The IMA CMA is the globally recognised management accounting credential — holding both CA and CMA signals to MNCs that you bridge Indian statutory accounting and international management accounting
- Salary uplift: CA + CMA holders in MNC finance roles typically command 20–35% higher salaries than CA-only professionals at the same experience level
- FP&A and business finance roles: Many FP&A and business finance roles at MNCs explicitly list CMA as preferred — CA alone is often seen as more audit/tax-focused
- Career switch to industry: CAs in practice who want to move into industry finance find the CMA credential accelerates this transition
Salary Comparison: CA vs CA + CMA in India
| Experience | CA Only (MNC Finance) | CA + CMA (MNC Finance) |
|---|---|---|
| 3–5 years | ₹12–18 LPA | ₹16–25 LPA |
| 6–10 years | ₹20–35 LPA | ₹28–50 LPA |
| 10+ years (leadership) | ₹40–80 LPA | ₹55–1Cr+ LPA |
US CMA vs Other Post-CA Qualifications
| Qualification | Duration After CA | Cost | Best Career Path |
|---|---|---|---|
| US CMA | 6–12 months | ₹80K–1.5L | MNC finance, FP&A, management accounting |
| ACCA (with exemptions) | 1–2 years | ₹1.5–3L | Global accounting roles, 180+ countries |
| CFA | 2–4 years | ₹1.5–3L | Investment management, equity research |
| MBA (IIM/ISB) | 2 years | ₹20–40L | Leadership, consulting, PE/VC |
For CAs who want to transition into global management accounting roles without a 2-year MBA commitment, the US CMA is the most focused and cost-effective option. CAs interested in the broadest global mobility should also consider ACCA, which offers extensive CA exemptions.
