LCSW Continuing Education Requirements: How State Rules Differ
There is no single national LCSW continuing education rule. This guide uses North Carolina, Illinois and Louisiana to show how hours, mandatory topics, distance learning limits and record-keeping differ, and how to confirm your own state board rules.
Licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) in the United States must keep learning to renew their licence, but there is no single national rule. Each state board sets its own number of hours, renewal cycle, mandatory topics and approval rules. That makes it easy to assume a requirement from one state applies in another, which can lead to a missed topic or a shortfall at renewal. This guide uses three state boards, North Carolina, Illinois and Louisiana, to show how much the rules differ and what to look for when you check your own. It is general information, not legal advice, and your state board's current rules always take priority.
Why requirements differ
State social work boards regulate licensure under state law, and each decides how many continuing education (CE) hours are needed, how often, and in which subjects. Some require topics such as ethics, cultural competence or supervision training. Some limit how many hours can come from distance learning, or require courses to be approved by a particular body. Rules also change over time, and third-party summaries can go out of date. One continuing education provider tells users plainly that requirements are compiled from published state-board summaries and change over time, so you should always confirm current rules with your board before completing CE for renewal.
North Carolina: 40 hours with a distance learning cap
The North Carolina Social Work Certification and Licensure Board sets a standard requirement of 40 contact hours of continuing education, including at least 4 hours of ethics-focused training, in a standard two-year cycle. Licensees with shorter renewal cycles, such as some associate-level LCSWA licensees, can document hours proportionally: 20 hours with 2 ethics hours for a one-year cycle and 10 hours with 1 ethics hour for a six-month cycle. A maximum of 20 of the 40 hours, or one-half, may come from distance learning, and those activities must be pre-approved by ASWB-ACE or NASW-NC. Documentation must be verifiable and available on request, but the board says certificates should not be attached to the renewal affidavit.
Illinois: 30 hours and several mandatory topics
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation requires 30 hours of continuing education each licence cycle, apart from the first cycle, when no CE is required. The hours must be completed in the 24 months before the licence expiry date. Illinois also mandates specific topics: 3 hours of social work practice ethics, 3 hours of cultural competence, 1 hour of sexual harassment prevention training, 1 hour of implicit bias awareness training and 1 hour on Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, once every three renewal periods. LCSWs also need 6 hours of clinical supervision training on their second renewal only. Licensees must keep proof of CE and provide it on request, and the department says it can require proof when a licence is restored, in random audits or in discipline cases. A licensee who cannot produce proof may face disciplinary action.
Louisiana: 20 hours, ethics and clinical content
Louisiana law requires 20 clock hours of board-approved continuing education before each renewal date, including three hours of ethics every two years. For LCSWs, no fewer than ten of those hours must be clinical content, including diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. Documentation of compliance must accompany the renewal application. The board can grant waivers for declared emergencies and extensions for extenuating circumstances.
What the comparison shows
- Hours range widely. These three states require 20, 30 and 40 hours, over differing periods.
- Mandatory topics vary. Ethics appears in all three, but only Illinois mandates implicit bias, sexual harassment prevention and dementia training, and Louisiana ties part of the requirement to clinical content for LCSWs.
- Delivery format can be limited. North Carolina caps distance learning and requires pre-approval by named bodies.
- Record-keeping differs. Some boards want proof submitted with renewal; others only on request or audit.
How to check your own state's requirements
- Go to your state social work board's website and find the continuing education page for your licence type.
- Note the number of hours, the renewal period and the date by which the hours must be completed.
- List the mandatory topics, and any ethics, supervision or clinical content hours within the total.
- Check whether courses must be approved by the board or by a named body, and whether online or self-study hours are capped.
- Find out what proof the board requires and how long to keep it, since audits can be random.
- Set calendar reminders well before the deadline and avoid leaving all hours to the last month.
If you hold licences in more than one state
Each licence has its own rules, and hours do not always count across states. Some boards accept courses approved elsewhere; others do not. Keep a spreadsheet per licence with hours, topics, provider, approval body and certificate location. Our guide to Social Work England CPD requirements shows how a regulator in the UK takes a different approach, based on recorded learning rather than fixed hours.
Making CE count for practice
CE is not only a licensing hurdle. Courses on suicide risk, privacy and ethics can improve day-to-day practice and reduce risk for clients and clinicians. For example, see our guides to suicide risk reduction for US healthcare staff and HIPAA training requirements, which many employers require alongside licence CE.
Frequently asked questions
Do LCSWs need CE in their first renewal cycle?
It depends on the state. Illinois, for example, requires none in the first licence cycle, while other states do not offer that exemption.
Can all my hours be online?
Not always. North Carolina caps distance learning at half the required hours and requires pre-approval of the activities.
Where can I find approved CE?
