They Are Differently Difficult

Neither is objectively harder - they test different things. ACCA's challenge is breadth: 13 exams across law, tax, audit, financial reporting, and strategy. CIMA's challenge is integration: the Case Study exams (OCS, MCS, SCS) require deep preparation with pre-seen material and synthesis across all three pillar subjects.

ACCA: What Makes It Hard

The breadth is the challenge - maintaining knowledge across subjects you may not use day-to-day. Strategic Professional pass rates for AAA have historically been below 35%. You need to stay exam-ready across multiple subject areas simultaneously.

CIMA: What Makes It Hard

The Case Study exams. They require 4-6 weeks of engagement with a pre-seen case, then live application in a 3-hour exam. Many candidates find this more stressful than traditional written papers. OT exam pass rates are typically 55-70%; Case Study pass rates 45-65%.

Which Suits You?

Strong in structured written exams on defined topics: ACCA may feel more manageable. Strong in applied business thinking and integrating knowledge across areas: CIMA case studies may suit you. Practice background: ACCA feels familiar. Industry/commercial background: CIMA content maps directly to your day job.
