How to Register for AAT: Student and Assessment Steps
Follow the current steps to choose an AAT level, register with a provider and AAT, and arrange assessments.
Updated for 2026: Starting AAT normally involves choosing the correct level, enrolling with a training provider, registering for the qualification and arranging assessments through an approved venue.
1. Choose the right qualification
Compare the current levels and use AAT Skillcheck if you are unsure. Confirm whether you are joining Level 2, Level 3, the current Q2022 Level 4 or the new Level 4 that begins in September 2026.
2. Choose tuition and an assessment route
Check what tuition includes and what is paid separately. Online tuition does not always include AAT registration, assessment fees, venue administration charges, books or remote invigilation.
3. Complete AAT registration
Use the official AAT registration process and enter your personal details consistently. Your provider can explain which qualification code and training-provider details to select. Keep access to MyAAT because it holds registration and result information.
4. Arrange assessments
Assessments are booked through an approved provider or venue. Confirm the fee, date, location or remote rules, identification and rescheduling terms before paying.
Before you submit
- Confirm the qualification title and version.
- Check the registration and assessment deadlines.
- Ask whether previous study may qualify for an exemption or recognition of prior learning.
- Keep evidence of payment and registration.
The September 2026 Level 4 change
Registration for the Q2022 Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting closes on 31 August 2026. Students already registered have until 31 July 2028 to complete its assessments.
The new Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians opens for registration and first teaching on 1 September 2026. It has five mandatory units. Students should confirm with their training provider which qualification they are registered for before choosing materials or booking assessments.
The current AAT accounting route
- Level 2 Certificate in Accounting: Introduction to Bookkeeping, Principles of Bookkeeping Controls, Principles of Costing and The Business Environment. Level 2 includes the qualification's synoptic assessment.
- Level 3 Diploma in Accounting: Business Awareness, Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements, Management Accounting Techniques and Tax Processes for Businesses. These are four individual unit assessments.
- Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting (Q2022): three mandatory units and two optional units chosen from five. It contains five unit assessments and no qualification synoptic assessment.
Use the current Learnsignal AAT hub to compare the three levels and the units available at each stage.
