How to Pass ACCA BT (Business Technology): A 2026 Guide
ACCA BT has an 87% pass rate — the highest in the qualification. Here's everything you need to know about the syllabus, exam format, and how to pass it first time.
Business Technology (BT) is the first paper in the ACCA Applied Knowledge level — and for most students, the first ACCA exam they'll ever sit. With an 87% pass rate in the December 2025 sitting, it's the most accessible paper in the qualification. But don't mistake accessible for trivial. Getting BT right sets the mindset and habits you'll rely on throughout your ACCA journey.
What Does ACCA BT Cover?
BT introduces the business environment and how organisations function. Its six syllabus areas are:
- Business organisation, structure and strategy — types of organisations, stakeholders, competitive strategy
- The business environment — macroeconomics, government policy, the impact of technology
- The accountant's role in business — functions of accounting and finance within organisations
- Leading and managing people — motivation, leadership theories, team dynamics, HR practices
- Governance, ethics and sustainability — corporate governance frameworks, ethical frameworks, social responsibility
- Professional ethics in accounting and business — ACCA's Code of Ethics applied in practice
The ethics content links directly to the Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM) you'll complete later in the qualification, so time spent here pays off twice.
BT Exam Format
BT is a two-hour computer-based exam (CBE) available on demand throughout the year — you're not limited to the four quarterly sittings. The pass mark is 50%. The exam has two sections:
- Section A: 46 objective test questions (30 two-mark questions and 16 one-mark questions) covering all syllabus areas
- Section B: 6 four-mark multi-task questions, each built around a short scenario
All questions are compulsory and there is no negative marking. Section B tests application rather than recall, so practise working through mini case studies rather than relying on definitions alone.
BT Pass Rates
BT consistently records the highest pass rate in the ACCA Qualification. In the December 2025 sitting, 87% of candidates passed — making it one of the most passable professional accountancy exams anywhere. That said, candidates who underestimate it and skip practice often fall below 50%.
How to Study for ACCA BT
Cover all six syllabus areas
Students with a business background often skip human resources or ethics chapters, assuming they know the content. The exam regularly tests governance, motivation theory (Herzberg, Maslow, McGregor) and ethical frameworks in detail. Every area appears.
Learn the frameworks, not just the names
Knowing Mendelow's matrix or Porter's Five Forces isn't enough — practise applying them to analyse a scenario in under two minutes.
Use ACCA's specimen exam and question bank
ACCA publishes a full specimen exam and practice questions for BT at accaglobal.com. Work through them under timed conditions, aiming to complete Section A in around 70 minutes and leaving 40 minutes for Section B.
Book when you're ready
Because BT is on demand, there's no pressure to rush. Give yourself four to six weeks of focused study, complete mock papers, and book once you're consistently hitting 65%+ in practice.
BT and the FIA Qualification
BT also has a Foundation-level equivalent — FBT (Foundations in Business and Technology) — which forms part of the FIA qualification. If you're starting from scratch and want a gentler entry point before the full ACCA, FIA is worth exploring first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is BT the easiest ACCA exam?
By pass rate, yes — 87% passed in December 2025. But the content is broad, covering business strategy, economics, people management and ethics. A few weeks of focused study is still needed.
Can I sit BT online from home?
BT is currently available as an on-demand CBE at ACCA-approved test centres. It is not offered as a remote home-based exam.
Does BT count towards ACCA membership?
Yes. BT is one of the three Applied Knowledge papers you must pass (or claim exemptions from) on your route to ACCA membership.
What order should I sit the Applied Knowledge exams?
ACCA recommends sitting BT first, followed by MA and FA. However, there is no compulsory order — some students sit all three in the same study period.
