What is AAT Introduction to Bookkeeping (ITBK)?
Introduction to Bookkeeping (ITBK) is a mandatory unit in the AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting. It introduces the fundamental principles of bookkeeping that underpin all financial accounting work and is typically one of the first units students encounter on their AAT journey.
ITBK Syllabus Overview
- Double entry bookkeeping — debits and credits, the accounting equation, T-accounts
- Business documents — invoices, credit notes, receipts, purchase orders, delivery notes
- Day books — sales day book, purchase day book, sales returns, purchase returns, cash book
- Ledger accounts — posting from day books to the general, sales, and purchase ledgers
- The trial balance — extracting balances and understanding what a trial balance shows
Exam Format
ITBK is assessed by a computer-based assessment (CBA) that can be sat on demand at an AAT-approved assessment centre. The assessment is 1 hour 30 minutes long and consists of a combination of short-answer questions and longer tasks requiring you to post transactions and balance accounts.
Key Topics to Master
Double Entry
The debit/credit rules are the backbone of ITBK. Remember: assets and expenses increase with debits; liabilities, capital, and income increase with credits. Practise posting transactions until this becomes automatic.
Day Books
Understand the purpose of each day book and how totals flow from the day book into the ledger accounts. A common mistake is posting to the wrong side of the ledger — always trace back to the source document.
Balancing Accounts
Learn to balance T-accounts confidently. Identify the larger side, insert the balance on the smaller side, total both sides, and then bring the balance down.
Study Tips for ITBK
- Do not just read the textbook — work through practice questions from day one
- Use the AAT's free practice assessments to understand the assessment style
- Make a debit/credit rules card and refer to it until the rules are embedded
- Work through full mini-scenarios that require you to use day books and post to ledgers end-to-end
