How Long Does CIMA Take? Realistic Timelines for 2026
How long CIMA really takes for working professionals - by level, study pace, and exemptions.
The Honest Answer: 3-5 Years for Most Working Professionals
CIMA typically takes 3-5 years for candidates studying part-time alongside full-time work. Some candidates complete it in 2-3 years with intensive study; others take 6-7 years fitting it around demanding roles or family commitments. There is no single correct pace.
By Level
Certificate Level (BA1-BA4): 6-12 months if you have no exemptions. Many candidates with relevant degrees or other qualifications are exempt from all Certificate papers.
Operational Level (E1, P1, F1 + OCS): 12-18 months studying 1-2 papers per quarter.
Management Level (E2, P2, F2 + MCS): 12-18 months.
Strategic Level (E3, P3, F3 + SCS): 12-18 months.
What Speeds It Up
Exemptions from Certificate Level (common for accounting graduates) save 6-12 months. Passing every exam first time saves significant time - each resit adds 3-6 months. Studying 10-15 hours per week rather than 5-7 hours compresses the timeline substantially.
What Slows It Down
Failing Case Study exams is the most common cause of delay - each failure means waiting for the next quarterly sitting. Demanding work roles during busy seasons (year-end, audit) often force candidates to skip sittings.
CIMA vs ACCA Timeline
CIMA is often completed slightly faster than ACCA for candidates with strong industry experience, because the content maps directly to their day job and the on-demand OT format allows flexible pacing.
