Finance Careers in Banking: The CFO Function Explained
What finance roles inside banks look like — from financial control to regulatory reporting, FP&A, and treasury — and how ACCA fits.
Finance Inside a Bank Is Different
The finance function of a bank is one of the most technically demanding and highly compensated finance environments outside of investment banking front office. Banking finance combines standard corporate finance responsibilities with bank-specific technical areas: regulatory capital reporting, IFRS 9 expected credit loss modelling, liquidity reporting, and stress testing. Finance professionals at major banks need a combination of professional accounting credentials and deep knowledge of banking-specific accounting and regulatory frameworks.
Key Finance Roles in Banks
Financial Control: Responsible for the accuracy of the bank's IFRS financial statements — a complex task given the volume and complexity of financial instruments, hedge accounting relationships, and consolidation scope of a major bank. Regulatory Reporting: Producing COREP (Common Reporting) and FINREP (Financial Reporting) returns to the PRA and EBA, Basel III capital adequacy reporting, and liquidity coverage ratio reporting. A specialist area requiring knowledge of CRR/CRD IV/V and PRA rules. FP&A/Finance Business Partner: Supporting business unit P&L owners with revenue analysis, cost management, and strategic planning. In a bank, revenue line analysis includes net interest income, fee and commission income, and trading revenue. Group Treasury Finance: Accounting for the bank's own treasury activities — structural hedges, funding, and liquidity portfolio management.
ACCA vs ACA in Banking Finance
Both are common. ACA is particularly prevalent in financial control and audit roles given the Big 4 audit background many bank finance professionals have. ACCA is strong in FP&A, management reporting, and regulatory reporting roles. Many senior bank finance professionals hold ACA having trained at a Big 4 firm before joining a bank.
Salaries in Bank Finance
Bank finance roles pay a premium over equivalent roles in non-financial companies. Financial Controller (mid-tier bank): £80,000-£120,000. Head of Regulatory Reporting (major bank): £90,000-£140,000. Group CFO (major UK bank): £500,000-£1,000,000+. Bonuses at major banks can be significant — 20-100% of base depending on seniority and firm performance.
