The Complete CIMA Guide 2026: Qualification, Papers, Pass Rates and Career Outcomes
Everything you need to know about the CIMA qualification—structure, all papers, pass rates, career outcomes, salary, and how it compares to ACCA. Updated for 2026.
The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is one of the world’s most respected accounting qualifications—and one of the least well understood by those outside the profession. If you’re weighing CIMA against ACCA, ACA, or CPA, or if you’re already partway through and want to understand what lies ahead, this guide covers everything you need to know.
What Is CIMA?
CIMA is a professional accounting qualification focused on management accounting—the financial intelligence that drives business decisions. Where ACCA and ACA focus on financial reporting and external audit, CIMA prepares you to work inside a business: as a finance business partner, CFO, financial controller, or strategic advisor to the board.
CIMA is part of the AICPA-CIMA alliance, which awards the CGMA (Chartered Global Management Accountant) designation—recognised in 179 countries and held by over 300,000 professionals worldwide.
CIMA Qualification Structure
CIMA comprises four levels, each with its own exams and integrated case study:
Certificate Level (formerly Foundation)
An entry-level qualification for those new to accounting. Three papers: BA1 (Fundamentals of Business Economics), BA2 (Fundamentals of Management Accounting), BA3 (Fundamentals of Financial Accounting), and BA4 (Fundamentals of Ethics, Corporate Governance and Business Law). Pass rates are high at this level (70–82%). This level is optional if you already hold a relevant degree.
Operational Level
Three objective test papers: E1 (Managing Finance in a Digital World), P1 (Management Accounting), F1 (Financial Reporting and Taxation). Plus the Operational Case Study (OCS), which integrates all three. Pass rates: OT papers 55–62%, OCS around 52%.
Management Level
Three papers: E2 (Managing Performance), P2 (Advanced Management Accounting), F2 (Advanced Financial Reporting). Plus the Management Case Study (MCS). Pass rates begin to drop: OT papers 48–55%, MCS around 47%.
Strategic Level
The final stage: E3 (Strategic Management), P3 (Risk Management), F3 (Financial Strategy). Plus the Strategic Case Study (SCS)—the most challenging exam in the qualification. Pass rates: OT papers 42–50%, SCS around 38%.

Career Outcomes for CIMA Qualified Accountants
CIMA qualifications open doors to senior finance roles in industry: Financial Controller, Finance Director, CFO, Finance Business Partner, Treasury Manager, and Management Consultant. CIMA is particularly strong in FTSE 100 companies, multinationals, and organisations that value finance professionals who can influence business strategy, not just report on it.
Average salaries for CIMA-qualified accountants in the UK range from £45,000 for newly qualified professionals to £120,000+ at CFO level. The CGMA designation typically commands a premium of 15–20% over non-qualified peers.
Studying CIMA Online
CIMA exams can be taken on demand at Pearson VUE centres or remotely online—meaning you can sit papers whenever you’re ready, rather than waiting for set sittings. This flexibility is one of CIMA’s major advantages for working professionals.
When choosing an online provider, look for: expert tutors with current industry experience, structured study plans aligned to CIMA’s learning outcomes, realistic mock exams (especially for the case studies), and responsive support.
