Chinese Medicine Board CPD: 20 Hours, and Content by Division

The Chinese Medicine Board of Australia requires 20 CPD hours a year with five interactive and four on professional issues, and the content required varies by division of registration.

The Chinese Medicine Board of Australia sets a 20-hour annual continuing professional development requirement, which puts it in line with most of the National Boards. What makes it unlike the others is that the content a registrant must cover depends on their division of registration, and there are two separate sub-quotas sitting inside the total rather than one.

Twenty hours, with five interactive and four on professional issues

The requirement is 20 hours a year. At least five of those hours must be interactive, meaning participatory activity rather than passive attendance. At least four must address professional issues — the ethical, legal and practice-management dimension of the work rather than clinical technique.

Two sub-quotas inside a 20-hour total leaves 11 hours genuinely unconstrained. That is a smaller free allowance than the headline figure suggests, and it is the reason a registrant tracking one combined number can look well ahead and still be short. The four professional-issues hours in particular are the ones most often left unaddressed, because they sit outside the clinical material a practitioner naturally gravitates toward.

Content varies by division of registration

This is the part with no real parallel elsewhere in the national scheme. Chinese medicine registration is divided, with practitioners registered in acupuncture, in Chinese herbal medicine, or in more than one division. The content a registrant has to cover follows their division rather than the profession as a whole.

The practical consequence is that there is no such thing as a generic Chinese medicine CPD package that satisfies every registrant. An activity that fills a requirement for an acupuncture registrant may not do the same work for someone registered in Chinese herbal medicine, and a practitioner holding more than one division has to satisfy the content requirement for each.

For anyone buying or commissioning training, that means the question is not whether a course is Chinese medicine CPD, but which division's content requirement it addresses. A catalogue that does not state the division is not usable for compliance planning, and a practitioner with dual-division registration should expect to need more than one source.

Why division-based content is a different problem from an hours uplift

Several National Boards increase the hours total for registrants holding an endorsement. Optometrists endorsed for scheduled medicines move from 20 hours to 30, as set out in our guide to the Optometry Board's endorsement uplift, and nursing and midwifery totals rise with dual registration and endorsements, as explained in our guide to NMBA CPD hours, dual registration and endorsements.

An hours uplift is simple to plan for: the practitioner buys more. A content requirement that varies by division is harder, because the constraint is on availability rather than volume. A dual-division registrant is not necessarily facing more hours; they are facing a narrower set of activities that can fill the hours they already owe. More money does not solve a supply problem.

Where it sits in the wider comparison

Placed beside the other National Boards, Chinese medicine's 20 hours looks unremarkable and is not. The Psychology Board's 30 hours contain a 10-hour peer consultation floor that cannot be purchased at all. The Medical Radiation Practice Board counts 60 hours across a three-year period with a 35-hour substantive share. The Pharmacy Board counts weighted credits rather than hours. Our comparison of why Ahpra CPD hours are not comparable across National Boards sets the published figures out board by board with their sub-quotas attached, which is the only form in which they can be read against each other.

Chinese medicine's distinguishing feature in that comparison is that it is the only board where the same number means a materially different thing depending on which division of the same profession a registrant holds.

What a compliant record has to show

Because there are two sub-quotas and a division-linked content requirement, a usable CPD log needs more columns than most. It has to show the hours, which hours were interactive, which addressed professional issues, and which division's content requirement each activity was intended to satisfy. A log recording dates, titles and hours alone cannot demonstrate compliance even where compliance was achieved, because none of the three constraints is visible in it.

Practitioners holding more than one division should keep the division attribution explicit rather than implicit. An activity relevant to both divisions is not automatically creditable twice, and a record that does not say which requirement an activity was claimed against invites exactly the question a registrant cannot answer retrospectively.

One currency warning

A joint consultation on revised CPD registration standards across the National Boards closed on 17 July 2026. The total, both sub-quotas and the division-linked content requirement could all change as a result. Before relying on any figure here for a compliance or procurement decision, check the current published standard on the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia's registration standards page.
