If you're planning a career in accounting or finance, three qualifications dominate the UK landscape: ACCA, ACA (ICAEW), and CIMA. All three are respected, all three are challenging — but they serve different career paths and suit different types of people. Here's a clear breakdown to help you choose.

ACCA in Depth

The ACCA qualification is the world's most globally recognised accountancy credential. With members in over 180 countries, it's particularly valued for roles where international mobility matters. ACCA covers a wide range of subjects — financial reporting, audit, tax, financial management, and performance management — giving you flexibility to work across practice, industry, and financial services.

ACCA's open entry policy means you can start regardless of your degree subject or level. The 13 exams are split across Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills, and Strategic Professional levels. The two Strategic Professional options papers let you specialise (Advanced Audit and Assurance, Advanced Taxation, Advanced Financial Management, Advanced Performance Management, or Advanced Taxation).

Best for: People who want maximum flexibility, international careers, or who are entering without a specific employer training contract.

ACA (ICAEW) in Depth

The ACA is widely considered the most prestigious accounting qualification in the UK. 15 exams across Certificate, Professional, and Advanced levels, plus a mandatory training contract (usually 3 years at an ICAEW-authorised training employer — predominantly accounting practices). The Big Four (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) are the primary route for most ACA students in the UK.

The ACA is particularly strong for audit and assurance roles, and the ICAEW brand carries enormous weight with UK banks, regulators, and listed company boards. The Case Study exam at the Advanced level is regarded as genuinely demanding — a sustained simulation of real professional judgement.

Best for: People targeting practice careers (audit, advisory), Big Four or top 20 firm routes, or CFO/FD roles in large UK corporates.

CIMA in Depth

CIMA is the world's largest management accounting body. Where ACCA and ACA focus on financial accounting, reporting and audit, CIMA focuses on management accounting — costing, budgeting, performance management, and strategy. The CGMA (Chartered Global Management Accountant) designation is jointly awarded with AICPA (the US CPA body), giving CIMA strong international reach, particularly in the US.

CIMA's Finance Leadership Program (FLP) is the current route, with Certificate, Operational, Management, and Strategic levels. The case study exams at each level are substantial — multi-day simulations that test integrated thinking rather than just technical knowledge. CIMA's practical experience requirement (PER) must be completed alongside the exams.

Best for: People targeting commercial finance, FP&A, finance business partner, or CFO/FD roles in industry. CIMA is less suited for practice/audit roles.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Want to work in a Big Four or audit practice? ACA is the natural route — most top practice firms offer ACA training contracts specifically.
  • Want flexibility — global roles, industry, financial services? ACCA offers the broadest options.
  • Want to be a Finance Director or CFO in industry? CIMA is particularly well-suited, especially in the UK.
  • Not sure yet? ACCA is often the safer initial choice — you can sit the first papers and decide as your career direction becomes clearer. ACCA also provides exemptions from CIMA if you later switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do both ACCA and CIMA?

Yes, and some people do. There is significant overlap in the earlier papers, and ACCA offers exemptions to CIMA holders and vice versa. Holding both is unusual but exists in senior finance roles. Most people choose one and commit.

Is ACA harder than ACCA?

Both are demanding. The ACA's Case Study exams are often cited as particularly rigorous. ACCA's Strategic Professional papers are challenging at their level. Both require roughly 3–5 years to complete. The "harder" label is subjective and depends more on your strengths than the qualification itself.

Does it matter which qualification I choose for salary?

All three lead to strong salaries. ACA holders in practice and advisory tend to earn well at senior levels due to the prestige of the qualification and the firms they train with. ACCA and CIMA salaries are competitive in their respective sectors. The specific employer, sector, and your individual performance matter far more than the qualification choice over a full career.
