With 13 papers spread across three levels, one of the first decisions every ACCA student faces is: where do I start, and what order do I study them in? Getting your study sequence right can significantly affect how quickly and smoothly you progress. Here is the recommended approach for 2026.

The Three Levels of ACCA

ACCA is structured across three levels, and you must complete each level before progressing to the next:

  • Applied Knowledge (3 papers): BT, MA, FA — the foundation
  • Applied Skills (6 papers): LW, PM, TX, FR, AA, FM — the technical core
  • Strategic Professional (4 papers): SBL, SBR, plus 2 from APM/ATX/AFM/AAA — the advanced level

You must complete all Applied Knowledge papers before sitting Applied Skills papers, and all Applied Skills papers before sitting Strategic Professional. Within each level, however, you have flexibility in the order you sit papers.

Most students sit the Applied Knowledge papers in this sequence: BT → MA → FA. BT (Business Technology) is the most accessible and a good confidence-builder. MA (Management Accounting) introduces cost accounting and budgeting concepts that appear in later papers. FA (Financial Accounting) covers the double-entry and financial statement fundamentals that underpin much of Applied Skills.

These three papers can be sat in any order or even simultaneously, but the BT → MA → FA sequence builds knowledge logically.

Applied Skills is where sequencing matters most. The recommended order is:

  1. LW (Corporate and Business Law) — largely standalone, good to clear early
  2. FR (Financial Reporting) — builds on FA; sit this before FM and AA
  3. PM (Performance Management) — builds on MA; sit this before APM at Strategic Professional
  4. TX (Taxation) — largely standalone but prepares you for ATX
  5. FM (Financial Management) — benefits from FR knowledge; feeds into AFM
  6. AA (Audit and Assurance) — benefits from FR; prepares for AAA

The critical dependencies to respect: sit FR before FM and AA; sit PM before APM; sit TX before ATX; sit FM before AFM; sit AA before AAA.

Everyone must sit SBL and SBR. SBL is best approached after you have breadth of knowledge from Applied Skills, so many students sit it last or second-to-last. SBR builds heavily on FR, so strong FR knowledge is essential before attempting it.

For your two optional papers, choose based on your career direction: APM for management accountants; ATX for tax specialists; AFM for those in corporate finance or treasury; AAA for auditors.

How Many Papers Can You Sit Per Sitting?

ACCA allows you to sit a maximum of 4 papers per exam sitting (March, June, September, December). Most students sit 1–2 papers per sitting, especially at Applied Skills and Strategic Professional level where papers are more demanding. Attempting 3–4 papers per sitting is possible at Applied Knowledge level where papers are shorter and less complex.

A Practical 3-Year Study Plan

For a student starting from scratch with no exemptions, a realistic timeline looks like this:

  • Year 1: BT, MA, FA (Applied Knowledge) + LW, FR
  • Year 2: PM, TX, FM, AA (completing Applied Skills)
  • Year 3: SBL, SBR, and 2 optional papers (Strategic Professional)

This assumes roughly 2 papers per sitting across 4 sittings per year. Your pace will vary based on work commitments, exemptions, and resits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sit Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers at the same time?

No. You must complete all Applied Knowledge papers before attempting any Applied Skills paper.

Is there a recommended order for the Strategic Professional optional papers?

No mandatory order, but choose options aligned with your career path and sit them after the relevant Applied Skills prerequisites (e.g., FM before AFM, AA before AAA).

What happens if I fail and need to resit?

You can resit a failed paper at the next available sitting. There is no cap on resits, but each attempt incurs an exam entry fee. Strategic Professional papers failed can be resit an unlimited number of times.
